Can I get a light like a doctor uses?

I spent several hours waiting around in the emergency room yesterday when I took my dad in (he'll be fine), and spent a lot of time looking at that fancy light they have in the middle of the ceiling for operating and such I guess. The kind that attaches to the ceiling with multiple adjustable arms, so you can position it wherever you're working. Also some sort of ultra bright, well colored light source.

Obviously the doctor version is big $$$$. I'm wondering if anybody sells more of an industrial version of such a light? That would be so great over my workbench. If you take the medical aspect out of it, it's really not that complicated of a fixture...

When my mom was an operating room supervisor at the local hospital she had to order a operating room light for a new room they added in the late 80's it came from Germany in a mahogony crate if i remember it was $ 25000 ! You could watch for a dentist office or retired doctor selling off office equipment or check with the hospital's in your area and see what they do with the old ones

Let me check with my boss and see if he has anything on hand. He part owns the e-recycling company that I work for and wholly owns a medical equipment recycling company, so there may be something kicking around over at his building.

Exam lights or surgical lights do become available. Make contact with maintenace department at the local hospital and let them know what you want. I was lucky, I worked for AMSCO at the time and got the through away's before anybody knew about them. I have the 22" surgical and a 12" exam light. They work great with machine tools.

I always look at the light the dentist uses when I'm in for a checkup, that thing on the articulated arm. They're actually similar in configuration to the loading dock light that TScott mentioned above. There must be used medical equipment stores out there, like used office equipment stores.

Dentist and doctor offices have some pretty neat storage cabinets that would be nice to have as well.

I gave two of those loading dock lights. They are 500 watts each and tend to get a little warm if your working directly under them - but that is a good thing in the winter time :)

Nothing in stock right now, just some parts & pieces, but I asked him to keep an eye out for complete ones and let me know when he has any.

Git,
We had similar ideas. I plan to mount one of the loading dock lights on or near my auto lift, to eliminate the need to a drop light when i have a car on the rack. Although I will try to avoid the halogen lights due to the heat they put off. Extra heat is not something I need during the Florida summers.

Nice thing about medical lights is they filter the heat out and color correct. Cooking the tissue and seeing the incorrect tissue color is a lawyer's delight.
