Can I paint my hydrant?

Is it just me, or does this remind anyone else of another pertinent question asked here before?

Can I ******** my pumpkin?

Life is full of odd uncertainties :lol_hitti

If its rusted sand blast it, throw a coat of red primer, then a coat of whatever color it is now and be done with it.

I remember during the Bicentennial year residents in my area were painting fire hydrants to look like Continental Soilders and other related images. Guess it is one of those situations where it is easier to get forgiveness than permission.

That was when disrespecting the American flag was a big social issue.....

In 1972, I was made to remove, ( or not wear my jacket) my peace-sign embroidered patch because it had a Stars and Stripes background. ( Public high school)

4 years later I was working for the Water Department.

Dogs ******* on Patriotic, flag themed hydrants was pretty common in 1976.

You can be too close to the fire hydrant to get the discount as well as too far. Years ago I
bought an old beach house, the hydrant was diagonally across the street. The house it was in front of could not get the discount as it was only 6 feet from the hydrant.

Don't ask.

:headscrat Do you really want the main hose(s) connected 6ft away from a burning house? Hint: usually the other end is closest to (but not in) the fire.

Color doesn't indicate flow rate here. The local FD uses two colors: yellow for standard hydrant and purple for recycled water. I'm not with the FD but I can tell you they don't want you painting their hydrants. My friend had one in his front yard that he polished and it looked awesome!

They have two colors here - red and black. Red = works. Black = dead, do not use.

Another thing about the color of hydrants.

One color (white/green) here is owned by the public water commission maintained by them

The second (red) is known as a private hydrant. These are typically installed on the property ( say a apartment development). They are reposnsible for annual testing and servicing.

Both are there for FD use.

How about painting it the same yellow, but adding some pinstriping to make it look sharper?
Probably accenting the existing shapes more so than custom car type striping.

I saw a photo today of a yellow wheel that sort of began the thought. Black stripes around the hub, then red spears in the spokes with black stripes on the sides:

Then it hit that lots of fire trucks used pinstriping and/or goldleaf, & that look might go with a hydrant too. It could stay the correct color for the FD, but still have a "one of" look. They use a lot of yellow or gold on red trucks. Red and/or black would probably look good on the yellow hydrant. Some old fire trucks:
