Iv been waiting years to get rid of my loud oil-less compressor for a larger oil compressor. I bought a Sanborn 60gal 240 and was shocked how loud it was when i turned it on. My dad has a older sanborn and its much quieter. Any ideas? Im bummed about the noise on this thing

What does the air filter look like? Cup your hand over the inlet and see if the sound changes. Is it different than dad's? Air filters do more than just filter the air.

Maybe it just needs to loosen in a bit.

#1) I'm guessing that's a 3450 rpm motor, which by nature is noisier.
#2) Without a decent air filter, you'll hear the noise of intake valves.
#3) Place vibration pads under receiver feet.
#4) It doesn't help that it's placed in a corner, and one wall is masonry, as those both increase the reflected sound.

On another note, how close to the wall is the back of the belt guard? Read your manual, it will state minimum distance needed for cooling.

If it's going to stay in that corner I would move it out from the concrete wall at least 1' and then get some sort of sound absorption material(I would probably go with some acoustical ceiling tile) and glue it to the block wall so it doesn't reflect the sound. Also with it as Tool Fool stated as close to the wall as it is it's probably not cooling correctly but could also be making more air noise because it's so close to the wall.

Here's what I did. I can get it to be less if I put a silencer on it. As well, I'd love to put an sound deadening mat hanging around it but, for now, it's tolerable. When I get a few extra dollars, I'd like to buy the silencer more out of curiosity sake. Right now the "pop" from the intake is not so much as gone as it's tone is changed and lessened. With that, you can hear the pump more than before.

Most of the iron compressors I've seen in that $400~800+ price range have a 3/4" pipe thread in the head for the filter. I've had a few variations on this filter setup and it doesn't take 1 dB away from the compressor noise level.

For the OP, maybe look into a light weight surround made from Quiet Brace

Cheapest automotive air cleaner I could find, and some steel plates & plumbing fittings. 13 cu. ft./min, can carry on conversation without shouting 5 feet away.

My new Sanborn is like yours, and is noisier than the old Sanborn that it replaced. When I go to work in the shop, I leave my hearing aids in the house. Problem solved.

I plumb in a small car muffler to the intake.
I have seen a favorite brand car intake filter used.
They are intake mufflers as well as filters.

x3 on running a hose on the intake to the outside, then putting the filter on the end of the hose. you'll be amazed at how much of a differencw that makes.

I've got the same model Sanborn and also replaced a loud Craftsman oil-free. I don't find it to be that bad. The Craftsman would make the cat freak and run, with the Sanborn, he just looks annoyed and walks away.

The length of the pipe from the filter to the head makes a lot of difference...I played with mine until I got the most quiet sound. It's about 8" long 1" ID . It now has a big deep thump sound.

So is the silencer filter worth it? Is that a solberg?

It's a tractor muffler from Tractor Supply with a small air filter on top from O'Reilly's. I ran dB tests in the old shop, both with the stock bitty plastic filter and with the intake filter actually up in the attic above the insulation. Made zero dB difference in sound level with the compressor running. That arrangement is more about the 1" pipe I had laying around than sound.

In this thread I see guys using open element air filters. I know from flipping the air cleaner lid on cars 40 years ago, you can really hear the howl of the inlet air through the element. The tapered snorkel on the air cleaner is what does the silencing.

Maybe something like this will help.

Has several furnace filters inside the box that the exhaust passes through.

Can have a conversation standing right next to it without having to raise your voice.

One of several reasons I bought this compressor.

From looking at the online photos of this pump, it appears to have the 'flat felt' style filter,
which doesn't offer options to changing to an alternate filter that I can see.

my 2 stage Devilbis is set up this same way and have been trying to find a solution for air cleaner on that as well. May need a lazer cut manifold flange to tap with 1 inch pipe tap

Someone on here hand fitted an adapter to a flat felt type filter to an intake silencer type filter.

That looks pretty cool. And welcome to the forum. Any more info on that setup? Are you affiliated with the company at all?

Sorry for the off piste post, but I've been looking to buy this same compressor because of how quiet it is supposed to me. What do you think of it? Is it as quiet as advertised (in real life, I don't mean taking noise measurements)? Good quality?

Thanks SweetD. No affiliation with the co. Its a Emax compressor. Searched around for awhile before I pulled the trigger. Wanted something for my blast cabinet and also something quiet. This fit the bill. If you notice in the one pic that muffler box is sticking into the opening of one of the garage doors. Im going to remove it and install it from the ceiling to clear that overhead door. When I do Ill take some more pics of it so you get a better idea of what im talking about. Great site by the way!

Alberto it is pretty darn quiet! My vacuum on my blast cabinet is louder. Im very happy with the quality and performance of this beast. No vibration runs smooth.

On My IR 2475, I had placed isolation pads on floor, made a couple 8ths rubber isolator gasket between tank and motor and pump, raised the intake. I couldn't tell jack. zilch. It changed the sound is all.

The more I listened the more I realized it was the tank ringing (particularly higher once the pressure was building up, 2 stage 175psi), you could box in just the tank and it would make a noticeable difference or carpet in that case would have helped I bet. If the valve noise is from the intake those techniques may help (didn't for me) because in the end it was the valve noise transferring to the tank I guess. Started off quiet at low psi but got up to 150-175 ...sounded louder. Though still quieter than other compressors I've had for sure.

I have a little 30 gallon husky pro compressor. It came with a crappy air silencer. Made sort of a clacking noise that was high pitched.

I replaced it years ago with a Solberg 1/2" air silencer and the noise dramatically went down by a ton. I even thought about adding an elbow to further reduce noise. Since it doesn't run all the time I am OK with it as it sits but without a doubt run some piping/remote hose and put a Solberg silencer on it and it will make it quieter..
