Hi all,

This is on my house. My master bath and closets are above the attached 2 car garage. Below is a picture of the space behind the knee wall. I have insulated the rafters as a second barrier to the cold. My questions is what purpose of the small angle 2x4s? and on the floor? (Blue Arrows - ignore the red line and yellow text)
Can I remove them?

WHY . . . . ???? What purpose to remove those in Cold Space of attic ??

Isn't that area vented to outside temperature with either ridge vent, gable vent, or roof penetration vent like whirly bird (rotary) or passive vent ???

Sorry about the image. How about now? I edited the image and tried again. Not sure what is going on. I usually put them up in photos.google.com and then copy the URL and paste it in. Recently is does not appear to be working - and the URLs are like a billion characters long - wonder if that has something to do with it?

I have put baffles from the soffit to the ridge vent and have filled the rafters with R30 Roxul insulation. The pic is from pre insualtion. I am looking to air seal it now and it would be easier without the "gussets". Just curious on them as the main roof has the same design and there are no gussets. Can't figure out the why they added them only in the garage space.

Myself, I wouldn't change what the engineers and county inspectors said needs to be there,I'd leave it alone and work around it. My house has that sort of thing as well and I'll be leaving it all in place, it was set up for 135 mph wind speed,as per county requirements, and I don't know exactly what that included with the exception of stronger attaching hardware throughout, but would assue some of that sort of thing as well, if not just for the load of the roof ,etc.

Your are doing it wrong
That space should be vented to the outside.
Top and bottom of the roof.
If you want extra insulation, put it on the wall and bottom (over the celing.)

And, no, you cannot remove the 2x4's

Ok. Won't remove them. Why am I doing it wrong?
I am venting properly from the soffit to the ridge. The reason for encapsulating that space is the floor of this area is "ceiling" of our mudroom below. By crappy design, the mudroom is heated by a vent from the second floor HVAC. You can see the silver tube (in pic) in the rafter going down to a vent in the mudroom ceiling. The reason is because the mud room is on a slab, like the garage, so no access from underneath. To top off this great design, the tube going to that vent is at the end of the run for the attic HVAC unit. So the air has plenty of distance to cool.
My thought is if I can keep that space semi-conditioned, I would also not lose heat through the mud room ceiling into an ice cold space.

If you have the image on your computer, click on the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom, then use the "Manage Attachments" button below the reply window. When you click on it, another window will pop up and you can find the pic on your computer when you click on the "Browse" button. Double click the found pic, then click "Upload"

The Emporer has no clothes. I don't see any pix either.

Edit: You posted a pic that I can see just before I posted.

Why not just insulate the ceiling of the room (floor of the picture you posted)? I don't see how those are in the way.

They are not. The wall is the back of our closets and master bath. Both over the unheated garage so they are cold also. By doing the rafters, I thought the mudroom below and the bathroom would benefit.
