Can I run a wire under a stair?

Hello:

I'd like to add an outlet which would require the wire to be run under an enclosed wood stair case.

The stair case has joists on both sides of it, and the walls on both sides are closed in. I can get under the stairway, run the wire and connect it to a box I will install on the joist. Hope I have been descriptive enough.

I intend to run 14/2 romex. If necessary I could also run armored cable.

Sure you can. It's no different than running it in a wall.

If the stair is indoors in an environmentally controlled space, romex is fine. If it's not controlled and can get damp, use UF. I'd also consider using 12/2, not 14/2. I don't use 14 gauge anywhere anymore.
