Hi guys I have tried searching for info with no real luck on sharing my hot water heater vertical vent with a new garage heater I am installing. So i have a natural vent hot water heater {seems like 3'' b vent}, and I am installing a 40,000 BTU detroit Radiant tube heater in my garage. I am thinking maybe its possible to join the 2 vent pipes since the hot water heater vent is in the wall joining my garage and house. Specs call for 3'' vent for the garage heater and no more than 2 90 degree elbows I think it would take the 1 90 degree elbow off the heater through the ceiling then probably 2 45 degree elbows to get it connected to the same vent. My guess is to common vent I would need 4'' vent out the roof? I am just trying to keep from popping another hole in my roof and I don't want to go horizontal, but if I need a new roof vent so be it, just wondering if its possible to join the 2, thanks for the help.

I think every tube heater I've installed did not allow common venting, some do have a kit available that allows two heaters to be vented though one vent but the vent is not a standard B-vent.

Adding a new vent flashing through the roof is no big deal unless you have a roof surface that isn't easily worked with(slate, clay tile, etc), shingles, metal and most other roofs are pretty simple, if you are concerned about it a roofer can often be found to do it for pretty cheap.

Looking at the manual online it shows c vent off the unit into a C-B vent coupler, then B vent all the way to the roof termination, if I installed a tee wye just before it goes through the roof connecting the hot water heater and the tube heater together would that fly with an inspector?

My water heater and house furnace share a common vent. The furnace has forced venting and the water heater is conventional venting. My stack is a stainless liner in a brick stack. Dunno if it realates or not.

In the olden days these things shared flues. Modern day stuff, especially with a forced exhaust, is a bad idea. I am fairly certain that it is against the code but not so certain that I would make a conclusion.
