Can I use #6 wiring for my compressor?

I have a 5 hp 230V single phase compressor (80 Gal, 2 stage) in my new shop and I have rigid metal conduit running to it. I know that #6 is overkill for this thing, but I happen to have quite a bit of #6 stranded wire. Will it hurt to run that size of wire to my compressor, or should I buy some #10?

In general there's no harm in using wire that's larger than required, as long as the terminals on the circuit breaker and the compressor terminals have the capacity for the wire. If they don't, then you get into having to install smaller wire pigtails at the ends, which can be done as well but it makes for a messy install.

Compressor should be hardwired.

Does it have a starter or just a pressure switch?

How far away is it from the breaker panel and is it within sight?

The only way it can get messy is if #6 won't fit the breaker lugs and/or the motor starter lugs (unlikely) and/or the pressure switch lugs (more likely). Its possible to use crimped ring terminals but they are probably special order.

I'll check the lug fit tonight. The compressor has a magnetic starter as well as a pressure switch. The electrical connection is supposed to be installed at the starter switch per the mfg. instructions. I have rigid conduit and a junction box installed in order to hard wire the compressor, and plan to use seal tite flex conduit between the box and the compressor. The compressor is on the loft above the breaker box and will require approx. 12' of wire.
