Can I use this 3 phase switch for single phase motor?

Hello, I am replacing a 3 phase motor for a single phase 115 V motor and want to know if this Cutler Hammer switch will run my single phase motor:

The 3 phase switch I’d like to keep using says (see photo):

MAX
1-1/2 H.P. 115V. 3PH.
2 H.P. 230/575V. 3PH

Will this switch run either of these single phase 115v motors? I can install either of these. I only have access to 115 volt power.

Option 1:
1/2 H.P.
8 Amps

Option 2:
3/4 H.P
FLA 10.8 Amps
SFA 12.4 Amps

Option 3:
Don’t use the switch for single phase motor.

Thank you in advance

odd switch rating. there is no such thing as 115v 3Ø

I suspect its a typo.

does the switch have a P/N somewhere

and typically the 3Ø rating will be close to double the single Ø rating.... but not always

Might be a part rated for a marine or aviation power system.

Very interesting for sure.

For less than $45 you can get a proper single phase 120 V switch rated for this HP. And they are made in this format (push-start, push-stop).

As others have said, any 3ph switch can switch a 120V load as long as the motors amperage rating is within the rating of the switch. Because 3ph current on motors than that of a 120V motor with an equal horsepower rating, you want to ensure that the amperage rating of the switch meets/exceeds that of the load.

Do keep in mind, that you will just need to utilize 1 contact instead of 3 and not switch the neutral / grounded conductor of the motor.

I imagine that is a remote switch with power coming in & out from another junction, so all you need to do is cap the unused switch legs at the junction where power comes in and out.

Just my two cents.

The photo 2356 looks like a typical magnetic starter switch. It would have 3 contacts, the switch won't know all 3 aren't used.
They were made in different versions, one as a maintained motor starting switch like the OP's, & as a control station to be used with a mag starter, which has less guarding around the buttons then a maintained one.

Ignoring power factor and efficiency:
Power output single phase motors:
P=V*I
Power output for 3 phase motors
P=1.71*V*I

So if the switch is rated for 3Hp 3 phase, the single phase max power rating is 3/1.71 =1.754 Hp.
It should be fine for a 1.5Hp motor.
