I have a ton of 6" cans that I want to convert to LED. They are all on dimmers.

My Q, Are all dimmers created equal? Can I use existing dimmers for LED? Or is there an easy way to tell if they are or are not compatible?

90% chance your existing dimmers wont work. If they do, consider yourself extremely lucky.
Good LED manufacturers will be able to provide you with a list of compatible dimmers that work with their products. Crappy manufacturers wont. That's one way you can tell the good from the bad.
Good luck

I knew it would be too easy. House built in 2004 but extensive remodel about 2012. Just looked up part number and yes incandescent only. Dang it.
Thanks for the insight.

Most of the better bulbs work with the major players in the dimmer field ... they have lists.

I recently replaced some of my always used down lights with the GE reveal bulbs -- nice light. I don't like the retrofit kits .. I have high end cans and the flat retrofits are a downgrade .. they have no light direction.

Others are not worth switching out .. it would takes years for a payback and I like the light

We have six, 6-inch can lights in our kitchen, four are controlled via a three way switch and a three way dimmer, and the other two are controlled by a single pole dimmer.

The dimmer switches were put in by the previous owner of this house before we bought the place in 2010. Because this was before the advent of regularly available LED bulbs, the dimmer switches were obviously not created to control LED bulbs.

However, in 2019 I replaced all the BR30 incandescent bulbs in the can lights with BR30 dimmable LED bulbs, and the dimmers work fine, to a point.

Here is what I have found. The LED bulbs light up to full brightness, with no flickering or noise. They do not however dim all the way down from full bright to completely off like the incandescent bulbs did. The LED bulbs will dim down about 75 percent, leaving the bulbs at about 25 percent brightness, but they will not go any lower.

But that is fine with me. I didn't dim the old incandescent bulbs down to anything less than about 50 percent. So the old dimmers that are there are still good in my book.

The dimmer switches are made by Lutron and the LED bulbs are made by Philips. I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but I thought I would include that info incase someone asked.

To the OP, the easiest way to see if your current dimmers are compatible with LED bulbs is to install the LED bulbs and see if the current dimmer works with them. They may work to your satisfaction like mine did. This is better than spending the money on new dimmers if you don't actually need them.
