Can rustoleum weak at seam-all over garage

I bought a can of the copper metal rustoleum paint. As I was shaking the can the pain started coming out of the seam and the force knocked it out of my hand and rolled in my garage all over my walls, weed wacker, gas cans and my black car. I went to Home Depot to look at other cans and it seems the seam at the top of the can looks different so either that caused the issue or the can was overfilled. I have called Rustoleum numerous times. They offered to send me graffiti remover. The paint got inside the housing of my Stihl weedwacker . I also tried to clean the paint off my mirror with goof off and its now ruined. I am concerned about the safety of this product. I know many have had problems with the cans not spraying but this is the opposite. Safety is an issue here and I reported this to Rustoleum but they don't seem to care.

If they (Rustoleum) won't make you whole, I'd check with your insurance or a lawyer. Either would have the power to go after them if the damage is high enough.

Pretty sure it says right on the side of the can "Stir Thoroughly". Your user name seems strangely appropriate.

And yeah nice first post.

Is this an aerosol can? I can't imagine the damage is all that big of a deal if it is. Bad luck. Buy a new can. Life goes on.

I don’t know how you can prove that the can was not intentionally or unintentionally tampered with. Home Depot might have taken it as a return. Your chances of getting anything more than a new can of paint without a long, protracted, expensive ordeal is slight. Clean it up and get on with your life. If you are unhappy, don’t buy their brand again.

Really guys? You don't see the issue here? Assuming OP is genuine here, that is BS on Rustoleum's part. If shaking a can of spray paint causes it to rupture, that is a problem. Especially if it sprays all over the side of your car and tools. I would be pissed. That's the kind of thing that makes you drive to a corporate office w/ pictures and demand restitution. Who wants spray paint across the side of their car? I imagine a body shop will charge at least $200 to get that **** off his car.

I must agree though, odd first post choice. What thought lead you to join the forum to post this?

how did shaking it cause it to start to leak? does the pressure increase in the can when shaking?
I have had cans spray all over the place when I accidentally dropped them and the nozzle got damaged, I can see that, but to start spraying from shaking it? it had to be damaged prior to shaking or we're not hearing the full story.

Well first...welcome to The Garage Jounal. Second, hold on to that can. Take photos / videos of damages. Determine what are the cost of the damages. Contact Rustoleum by certified letter asking for the monetary damages. After that the ball is in their court. I can come up it’s a better direction other than that. Good luck.

Bodyshop guys put aerosol cans in shakers all the time (NOT RECOMMENDED!!!). I've seen the bottoms flattened out but that's after a long time .

Maybe OP was a lurker for a while, finally THIS issue pushed HER to post?

But assuming she is being honest, frankly she has little recourse. There is utterly no way she can PROVE anything. Even a $5000 forensic examination of the can by a failure/metallurgist would not get her the proof.

Just a very very hard 'case' and as such, Rustoleum isnt really going to be interested.

They've already logged his 'complaint' and it will be part of their Quality System- how they deal with HER damages are unrelated to what rustoleum might be doing to address this failure mode/issue/risk....

Sure. Agree, a good step.

But the odds of this doing anything are so low, that the aggravation and time wasted are probably not worth the effort.

Next time treat it like a live grenade and dive on that *****.

The damage is extensive, the passenger side door and mirror are ruined as is the underbody plastic trim. The floors can be cleaned with goof off but the weed wacker was new and the paint got inside the housing and is on the motor so I am afraid that when that warms up with use, that might cause other problems. As the can rolled on the floor the paint got all over my Gas cans, hole saw, screwdriver my Traeger grill, garage wall, and a piece of oak furniture that was in the garage waiting to be picked up by a friend. I was able to get the paint off the furniture and Traeger. Home Depot uses Sedgwick James and they filed a claim on my behalf but they are the ones who aren't getting back to me. I initially got in touch with one person who offered to send me a can of graffiti remover which they say is less toxic than goof off but it will take me hours to clean everything. The remaining issues are the car and car mirror and weed wacker. I looked at several cans on the shelf at the store and the seal at the top of the seam does not seem to be crimped and thats where mine failed. I saw cans with dents and the employee there said they get tossed around a lot. There was another can with pain that leaked out of the top seam of the can below the sprayer. I would post pictures if I know how to post them. And oh I'm a woman so go easy-no need to get hostile about this conversation. And I have lots of tools and damn well know how to use them and I am a girly girl. My idea of a great date is to go shopping at Lowes or Home Depot! I am gong to file a report with consumer product safety commission but we all know that won't do much good.

It's spray paint correct? Buy a can of acetone and some microfiber rags. start cleaning. Nothing got ruined. take it easy on the car, and wax it afterwards. Watch the deacls on your tools, it will remove the ink. Other than that it's just spray paint, it comes off easily.

You didn’t heat the can first did you?
Other guys on different threads here on GJ have been talking about doing that.

Don't listen to the a holes who want to breate and mock for what I would be livid over as well. Pretty cynical to doubt someone who is voicing concern over a can of spray paint exploding and getting paint everywhere. Who makes that **** up? Jeez.

Consumer product safety is a good start and I would let rustoleum know also.

I know a lot of people like it but their paint are not good. I have had bad results long term spraying their product.

Anyway good luck keep us posted and welcome girly girl with tools that digs dates to home depot. Most men's dream really.....

I like Rustoleum and use it when I have the need, in either cans or spray cans. Some have posted about not being able to use a partially-consumed can the next time. I always hold the can upside-down & spray 'till no paint vapor is flowing, and sometimes I'll pop-off the nozzle and clean it w/acetone or lacquer thinner though I don't do it every time.

Only thing I would do is as mentioned, get solvent & get cleaning. If I felt it was especially egregious, I would do the same thing, take some pics and send a letter to corporate HQ. I don't know what the propellant is, but in an enclosed space, if it was petroleum-based, and there was a source of ignition nearby such-as a pilot light, a 'perfect storm' might result in a fire or explosion. All the more reason to have a flammables cabinet.

You guys are slipping: first posts by a 'girly-girl,' who likes to shop at tool/building supply stores, and who claims that's 'a good date,' and no-one has asked for visuals? Stop sniffing the leaking accellerant from the paint can!

If there were other cans that didn't look like they had good crimps or paint leaking out, you should have gotten pictures of those cans. While they are in the store, on the shelf and showing a SKU label on the shelf edge.

Posting pictures here is not hard and there are a few threads on the subject. If the pictures are uploaded to your computer, they can be attached here.

At the bottom of the "Quick Reply" box is "Go Advanced", click on that. Under "additional options" Click "Manage attachments" A new window will open and click "Choose files" that opens you photos and choose which picture you want uploaded. Keep n mind, there is a file size limit. Once those pics are uploaded, you can make your post and the photos will be attached.

Thanks for all of the great advice. I am going to contact consumer product safety commission, Ho' Depot Management, my auto and homeowners insurance and I will also get some acetone and start cleaning the floor and tools. Unfortunately I used goof off on the mirror before I received your advice. Any ideas about what I can do with the mirror to restore the black color?

WD-40 also works with some spray paints.

Probably needs to be thoroughly degreaser and repainted.

Isn’t goof off actually a light oil based product, like a thin WD40?

Welcome

Soaking some spray paint with Simple Green will take it off. I've used it to clean up tags on repainted machinery. Not sure if it will work with this specific product however. Especially given that it has been applied heavily.

Good luck.

The home depot can pictures....Looks like a couple of those cans have been exposed to extreme heat! Possibly stored in a tractor trailer in the dead of summer for an extended period of time.

I had something similar happen to a can of Walmart black spray paint several years ago. Dropped a pliers(not a large one)off the bench and it landed on the top seam ap was off)the can took off across the floor spraying everything in its path.
By the time I got to it and tossed it in a garbage pail it had done a lot of damage. Still have stuff with black paint on it years later.

Did you see the pics of everything else other than her hand?

OP- I would relentlessly pursue the HD or Rustoleum insurance company. If you file a claim or even call the insurance company ( other than your agent maybe) they could put a claim in the system that could affect your insurance rates. Not to say you shouldn’t call, but just be aware what may be in store.

Probably a quality control issue with the factory not getting the seam crimped properly. I would hang on to the can and send clear pics to Rustoleum of the problem. Contact someone other than the customer service rep. Go up the ladder a rung or two...
EDIT: So why dont you post pics of your can that blew the seam??

Recommend you seek professional advice at a reputable auto body shop to repair the car. The mirror may be repaintable, but may cost less to replace.
