How long a new post stays on the new post search?
I am confused as to the duration of a post remaining on the "New Post function". Most of the other forums it gets cleared once a day, but that does not seem to be the case here at GJ. A couple of times a day the page count of new posts will be close to 8 pages then it is back down to one or two. Then a few hours later it is back up to several pages.
So I am a little confused, so any response will be greatly appreciated.

thanks for your time

From my understanding, it stays in the new post section until you view each page. I pretty much just hit "new posts" every time I want to check the site. It shows how many posts there have been since my last visit.

If that was the case this posting would have appeared in new posting. I had to find it in Questions and Suggestions section.
My guess is the new posting are time based every x number of hours the "New Posting" section gets flushed.
Maybe we can get a moderator to chime in.

I believe the new posts are from the time you were last logged into GJ. Close out your browser and come back an hour later you might have 3-4 pages. Do it again and come back after 20-30 hours and if the forum is busy, it might have 20 some pages of new posts.

It wasn't in your new posts because you already viewed it when you made the post.

The posts were made by other people after my post and not found in New Posts.
For example this post by you was not found in "New Posts" I went and looked in the questions & Suggestions section.
New posts are not determined by what you have looked at.

Eric

I do not think so, in order for the system to do that for all the users it would put a large demand on the database.
Every morning when I look before 7am there is about 8 pages about 10am ish the count of pages drops to 1 or 2 and starts to build up again.
It is time based not on what the users views, when a users views a topic in "New Posts" it looses the bolding of the topic.

It goes by activity. If our activity on the site was the same, new posts would be the same but if you aren't as active as me, you'll have more new posts than me.
It's not necessarily about logging in or out, I never log out, I just refresh my page when I get around my computer. Sometimes it's every few minutes, sometimes it may be a day or so. New posts count will be according to my last activity.
Try it a few days and you'll see. Has nothing to do with time based.

Try a different approach, go to quick links and todays posts. That will show all posts for the last 24 hours and will also show the new activity since you were last active. Pay attention to the times of the posts and you'll find it tracks your activity.

If I understand it correctly New Posts is the list of posts since your last activity on the site.
  • Right now up at the top right of my page it shows "You (I) last visited: Yesterday at 7:54 PM".
  • If I look at the oldest new post on the list it shows "Yesterday at 7:55 PM".
  • Every time I click on something else I believe both of those clocks start over.
  • If I leave everything alone for awhile & come back I should find both of those clocks set to whenever I last did anything.
  • As long as you continue to be active on the site new posts are added to the top of the list every time you click on New Posts. The bottom of the list remains the same as long as no one posts in those threads & you keep clicking on stuff.

And to test I posted that ^ at 8:09 PM (PST). I looked at a couple more things, left for awhile, & came back at 8:38 PM.
  • It now shows "You last visited: Today at 8:11 PM".
  • The oldest new post on my list is "Today at 8:11 PM".
  • Every time I hit New Posts new ones are added to the top of the list, but the last post remains the same.
  • I currently show 3 pages of new posts after approximately 1/2 hour.
  • Earlier it was 19 pages after approximately 24 hours.
  • If you use the "Back" feature you will see the same list as when you last hit New Posts. It doesn't automatically update when you go back. If you hit New Posts you'll get a new list with new items at the top.

Thank you for posting that as it's more eloquent, than what I was trying to get across. Sometimes, what my brain is trying to get across fails to get to my "hunt & peck" fingers.
