Can someone educate me on paint guns

Hi all,

I've been reading, and trying to pinpoint an answer, but not getting any real clarity on paint guns.

I'm a hobbyist and DIYer. Mostly I just like to do stuff around my house, focusing on woodworking and cars.

I'm willing to save and buy a good semi-pro "value" product that will give me solid results for anything from painting houses, to furniture and cabinets and car panels.

I'm looking at the Fuji Semi-Pro HVLP system. But I'm still not understanding whether this will also work for car panels, or if I need a different paint gun all together for that type of work. Am I better off with an HVLP system that hooks up to a conventional compressor?

Can someone make a recommendation, and explain why I need one system or another?

Thanks!

With paint guns one size NEVER fits all. Everything is determined by the viscosity of what you're spraying and the quality of finish desired. The Fuji would do great for woodworking where you use lacquer. Put a huge tip on it and it might spray house paint. But, there has never been a show car at SEMA painted with a Fuji sprayer. A three of four turbine Accuspray with the model 10 gun well that's possible, but unlikely and if you're going to spend that much money you might as well get a SATA 5000.

Everybody wants to have one gun do it all but it can't. I wanted to be a **** star but came up just a little short if you get my drift. Paint guns are the same kind of a deal.

If your looking for all around hobby use, you really can go wrong with the HF purple gun. They're cheap enough where you can buy a few of them for primer, base and clear if you want. That will at least get you going. I've used my HVLP guns to paint everything from vintage restorations and hot rods to latex paint on house trim and doors to stains (I'll never pickup a brush again). And just be clear, I have a few guns all the way from a HF mini gun to an $800 Sata. And yes the Sata was worth every penny and no, I don't use my high end guns for latex paint and stain.

Thanks. So does this mean I’m better off with a compressor and multiple spray guns? Can you recommend something in between harbor freight and sata? One for each type of painting? I guess with a gun to my head I’d rather be on the cheaper end for furniture and slightly higher for car stuff?

Appreciate any recommendations.

Those HF guns are dirt cheap with a coupon. I've been really surprised at the finish I've seen some guys getting with them. I know a couple that don't even bother to clean them. They are so cheap they just pitch them. One guy even painted a gloss black truck. I'm not looking to use one for a show car paint job but for about anything else I think I would.
