Talking with a guy about his top box, I know nothing about boxes and I know sometimes people pass stuff off as SO when it's not so I was hoping some of you experts could identify this and give me a value as I don't know what to offer or if I should even be interested. He told me the box is 36/22/22 inches, and has 12 drawers, non ball bearing slide. He said it was valued by Snap On man at 450.00 wholesale, 700 retail. I've asked him to provide me the model/serial number (do they even have one?) and a photo of that serial number if possible. He also said the lock was missing which you can see in the photo as well. Thanks for any help.

I started looking through pictures online and hit on the KR550C which looks identical to me so I put that in ebay and came up with an active listing asking 395.00 which has been run multiple times with no sale, just trying to figure out a good price to ask from the local guy as he told me to make him an offer. Does anyone know if this is a decent top box?:

I have one under my bench. I was/am thinking about selling it soon and had planned to CL it for $300-350 and expect to take $250-300.

It's a nice box for that amount of money.

I'm in for the info myself. I'm curious what he considers a good offer.

Cool thanks guys, how much will it be to fix the lock you think?

Oh and was I right thinking it was a KR550C?

That was SO largest stack on top box up until the late 80s. It is built like a tank. If it's as clean as it appears less than $400 would be a fair deal in my book. Less than $250 would be a "you ****" deal.

KR550 is correct.

Perfect, exactly what I wanted to know. Can you let me know how much the lock it to fix on these?

I don't really have an answer, but I can tell you it just latches in the lid and is not overly complicated. I searched on ebay and it looks like you should be able to get it done in the $15-35 range. There is a drawbar in the back that separately locks all the drawers in.

I actually was a Snap On dealer for 8 years, I sold a similar box to a road construction guy, I can't remember what I sold it for. The Snap On dealer you talked to is right in the ballpark.

As mentioned it is either a KR650 (ball bearing) or KR550 (friction slide). Those models are very difficult to tell apart especially with that badge style. I am pretty sure that is one of the friction slide boxes (550) due to badge loaction. ~$40 by the time you get the lock cylinder and bar. Depends on in person condition and what if any problems it has. I could see up to the low $400's for a ball bearing one in good condition. Realize that there can be a big difference in what a snap on driver says something is worth, what they can offer in trade in value and what something actually sells for on the person to person used market.

It's either a KR650 or KR650A. The KR650A would be ball bearing.

KR6xx series were ball bearing, the KR5xx series were friction slides. General rule of thumb.

It is the 550 b/c it has the friction slides, I think I can get it for around 300.

I have the Matco ball bearing top and bottom in that size, and had the friction slide version before. IMO it is the best box configuration. If you get it, I would be on the lookout foe the bottom box. They also made a side cabinet as well.

The only problem I see with it is I have a 44" roller cart it would sit on top of so that would look a little weird but I guess not a big deal.

if the rest of the box is in good condition, i'd say thats a fair price.

i bought one new in '86, it still survives.

btw, have some help to load/unload it,

they are heavy and awkward to handle

What was the difference between the KR650 and KR650A?

The oldest catalog I have is a 1990 and it shows the KR650A.

I don't know exactly. Generally speaking, letter designation differences usually indicate very minor changes such as pull handle shape, design and badge style. Some of the last letter designation of a series had a ball bearing slide thrown on the bottom most drawer. Number series designations indicated major structural changes such as the KR5xx to the KR6xx went from friction slides with dividers to ball bearing slides on full width drawers without dividers. Then sometimes I think they just wanted to introduce a new model A vs B vs C. :lol_hitti
