Im looking to get a new laptop as mine old one has gone to ****. ive got about 500 to spend 600 max. I know it isn't a lot but im sure there are some good budget ones to be had.

Brand doesn't really matter and i need at least 500 gigs of storage, which seems to be the standard nowadays.

Any insight or personal experience would be great.

I really like the toshiba satellite series. We have three in the household and they are great. I have also had the Lenovo and Dell laptops as my work issued laptop and they were good.

I would stick to the Intel i3 or i5 if possible. They would be in your price range. Get at least 4gb of memory or more. Memory makes a big difference in performance. Windows 7 is the best if you can find one with that.

I second asus and toshiba. My asus has served me well over the last 5 years. My wifes toshiba is awsome. Small powerfull and the battery lasts forever. Plus it wasnt super expensive think it was $700 like 2-3 years ago.

I bought an Hp after high school. It was about 1000 at the time(6 years ago) and it just kind of fell apart. Not sure if I got a bad one or what, but I take care of my stuff. Ive heard good things about dell and I know Asus is becoming a major player in the game.

Can someone give me some specific models? I know im being a pain but I sure appreciate all the help guys

I've had a Dell laptop for the last 10 years. i bought a used one from a company my wife works for when they were upgrading so it was already about 5 years old and after about another 5 years i opted for buying a new Dell instead of buying a new battery so i could get a bit more power.

keep from getting a virus and it should last you for maybe 10 years as long as you have all the bells and whistles needed to run your programs. the batteries might need replacing every few years if you don't have access to a plug.

I remember when i paid $2000 for a 486 computer and my computer guy at the time asked me why when a 386 was all the power i'd need. also the upgrade from 4 to 8 ram was about $500 which might cost $5 now or less.

buy the biggest fastest one you can afford and i'd almost consider buying a Mac because MS is still trying to fix Windows 95 and they call it Vista 8.1. Mac never seems to crash when i ask the people i know that own them and they still have Ipod, Ipad and other top products to fund some pretty good R & D.

good luck

What, no questions or comments about Country of Origin? Oh, right, nobody makes any laptops in the USA anymore.

I suppose a few are assembled in the USA but at best they're designed and engineered in the USA and assembled of foreign and domestic components.

My wife's Dell Inspiron has been flawless and very easy to use. I'd look for a used one of those from the right seller.

Dell, HP or Lenovo business class. Personal laptops just won't stand up against a business laptop.

Dell is the only brand I buy now, easy to fix software and hardware wise. If you don't mind second hand look for surplus sales/auctions for a university or from a city police department :) Its how I get my computers and other goodies.

My Toshiba Satellite C655 is three years old.. I like it, and would buy another.

A year ago, I bought a used Toshiba NB505 notebook that is compatible with some older test equipment that requires FAT32.. I like that one equally well.

both are lower priced machines

I agree with impact socket's reply in that read reviews as many as you can. Will that guarantee a good one no but it has worked well for me. Amazon generally has lots of reviews as well.

The following website had daily deals postings for tech products. (Other deals sites my work well also.) I would just follow this and check out the deals from big companies as they come along. When I was shopping, I found that a lot of the deals were nice laptops but with one crappy feature such as a low resolution screen. You can get a pretty good laptop these days for $500.
