My garage is unfinished. Cans sit very well on the 3 1/2" side of a 2x4.
I nailed some 2x4's between the studs and set them on there. Kinda hillbilly, but, it works perfectly and makes use of room that would otherwise be unused to me.
Remember can height- There are about 2 sizes. The "normal" height of a spray paint can and the "taller" height of something like CRC Brakekleen. Make your storage plan to accomodate different heights.

I canned most of my storage ideas and just leave everything out on the bench. OK, I'll stop.

I use a 2' x 5' x 12" metal cabinet for paint and thinner storage. It's full and I'd like to have one of the larger red Craftsman cabinets but I'm too cheap to pop for it. My dad had his spray cans in a home brew cabinet that was one 2x4 thick with 1x4 shelves and 1/2" plywood doors. Pretty easy to make.

These have spray can storage in the doors.

I have one cabinet that I keep GumOut, WD-40, and BrakeKleen in one door, and other spray lubricants in the other. The rest of the cabinet holds my spray paint cans. Watch for scratch-n-dent deals!

You could likely do something similar on the doors of about any cabinet.

Here's a picture of the spray paint shelving that my cousin and I built. It holds about 80 cans.

That is truly excellent. :bounce:

Grid like that is on craigs list all the time. You could also ask mom pop video stores if they have extra or even blockbuster. New the big grid back 2'wide 6'high is $20 so 2 of them is $40 and then the shelves are $8 each

Some good ideas here. I have about 5 main spots they reside, its a never ending battle. Most paints go in cabinet just to try to keep them straight. Many common use ones like Brake clean and pen sprays ride on service carts at point of use. Many of these are older pics, really filled up now.

My shelves are only a foot deep.
On purpose.
I hate to have to look behind things to find what I am looking for.

But I found the 24 inches of height I used was more than I needed when I was putting away those square gallon cans.

So I built a second shelf back against the wall, only 4 inches deep, about 14 inches above the original shelf.
That let me put gallon cans on the original shelf and still have a place above them for the spray cans.

And everything stays one can deep.

We cut the roof off a old camper trailer and store paint cans an spray paint in there and we can tow it around if we need to move it
