Can this ratchet be saved?

Found this in the bottom of an old parts bin I've had laying around. Can it be saved. I wiped it down with wd-40. TIA.

take a scotch bright or steel wool too it and see what it looks like then. if it works then id say just use it as is!

or free it up and and use it.

Sure - all that superior metallurgy and machining hasn't begun to be harmed.

If worse comes to worse, sand blast, rebuild and then use it....

Good catch. Yes. I did call the 800 number and they sent a kit, gratis.

I just rebuilt the mechanism. I'm going to take scotchbrite as stated earlier. Thanks again.

Heh, I wish. Rebuild kit gears made lately all have a grind mark on top for some reason. Also the finish on that gear is flawless . Had it been exposed to whatever rusted up the finish on the ratchet it would itself be rusted much worse.

I have an L-710 that looks EXACTLY like that one, missing chrome and all. It's my favorite 1/2 drive ratchet.

Mine is a year older than yours, 1959.

Use a wet SOS pad or oil and fine steel wool; Scotch Bright will leave scratches in the "good" chrome.

That looks a lot like my 1/2" Snap-On ratchet. Plenty of "traction" for a better grip than those new shiny ones . . .

I found mine in the trunk of a car I bought/sold years ago.

Try soda blasting the body, wont harm the chrome and will remove all of the rust and discoloration.

I dont see whats wrong with it. It just needs to be used. Most of my Rats look similiar.

I'd go the exact opposite route. Remove the mech. Grit blast it to take the chrome off. Use some emery paper to smooth the pitting. Soak it in Evap-o-rust for a few days - that will turn it black. Put a new mech in it and it'll be good for another 50 years.
