I put in an offer on this South Bend (owner is asking way too much for it).

Assuming it is still reasonably flat, can this even be restored? Would this be a good candidate for the electrolysis bath? I offered $400 with idea being its still a South Bend. Or am I crazy for even thinking about this?

Extremely difficult to evaluate a machine tool via a picture, especially a picture like that. Machine wear and tear, tooling (useful tooling) and ability to run are all huge factors. On the plus side that is a model A with quick change gear box so....

Short answer, yes. Make an electrolysis tank and start derusting parts. There are rebuild kits ln ebay with all the felts. Basically think of it as the lathe as a kit where you have to disassemble everything, degrease it, derust it, and paint it before you can use it And it will be fun. Plenty of info on the web, youtube videos, etc. That said, it will be many hours of work and the price should reflect that. I paid over 500 for a south bend in worse shape but it had a ton of tooling that I needed.

I don't know owner hasn't gotten back to me yet. In looking at pic again, it looks like gear covers on top of spindle are off. I hope they still have them, LOL...

There would be no gear covers over the spindle on that machine--it pre-dates that type of guarding. Not a bad price for a quick-change SB. Many times when a machine has been sitting for many years, parts and tooling will be laying all around the room--make sure you get everything that should go with it. Buying tooling later often costs more than the machine.

Yeah, it seems to be in a barn along with a lot of other stuff that owner is looking to unload before "the barn falls down", LOL. Old Harley sportster, OLD MG (I think) convertible, etc...

As far as the gear covers, it looks like there are mounting holes below the gears with some sort of impression that something was mounted there in the past. Could be wrong...

It is missing (or at least they are not attached) the back gear covers on the spindle on the far extremes of the drive pulley. The pulley didn't have a cover, but the back gears certainty did.

No.......send it to me instead!

My price would be $250 with little tooling up to $400 with all the accessories.

But I have 3 already.

Get over on the South Bend Lathes group on Yahoo Groups.

Look for steady rest, taper attachment, collet closer, and various other tooling.

I cant belive how many times some one takes a picture of some thing they want to sell and dosent bother to take the time to uncover it. Five minites of work would have easyly add a great deal of resell value to this lathe. It steal looks like a go deal.

Looks like a 9x36, good little machine. $500 for sure.
