Can Torx Plus Tamper-proof replace plain Torx Plus?

I'm looking to expand my tool selection to include Torx Plus. Since I currently have none, can I get one set of Torx Plus tamper-proof (or Security) bit sockets that will function well in regular Torx Plus applications, or is there something else different between the two besides the hole in the center?

Torx Plus tamper proof has 5 lobes, TP has six so no, they are not a replacement.

Got it. I guess I should have looked at pics of each driver a bit closer. Many thanks for the clarification.

Now, two more things to get. I think I need a bigger toolbox!

Not sure if this is all a conspiracy from the tool and toolbox makers.

When I started the shop sockets where all in SAE of course but we had one set of sockets 1/2 drive standard length and a couple spark plug sockets. With a set of open ends, box ends, ignition wrenches, a couple adjustables, and screwdrivers we could fix almost anything that came up.

To fix the same percents of problems today we have 1/4,3/8,1/2,3/4 drives in SAE and Metric, with regular length, deep, spline, flex, impact regular, impact long, torx, torx security, torx plus, torx plus security, e torx, triple square, 8 pt, metric and SAE hex bits, spark plug in many more sizes. Extensions and gizmos in sizes or lengths unheard of. This along with metric and SAE flex ratchet wrenches, regular ratchet wrenches, 2 sets of combo wrenches in SAE and metric long, mid, and short sizes. This is just getting started.

No wonder someone asks if two jobs can be done with one set.

At least you had a headstart when they started coming out with this stuff. Try coming into the field were all that stuff has already come out and now even more is coming out. :shocking: its almost depressing cause you think you have enough for the bare minimum of things and then a project comes along and does this to you :eyecrazy::lol::willy_nil

Yeah, I've got one drawer filling up with bit sockets! As my vehicles get newer, I keep needing to buy more new types of tools. It used to be that I'd occaisonally pull out my SAE Allen key set, then metric hex (I still call them Allen...), then Torx sockets, then Allen sockets, then......etc, etc. And I'm only a home hobbyist. No wonder profession techs are always buying new tools.

I started off with Lisle Torx, but after easily breaking one, I picked up the NOS SK set and FACOM set from GJ classifieds. Then the Wright hex set came up. I needed metric hex, so I ordered both SAE and Metric Wiha hex bit sockets to compare them to the Wright set. I like the Wright better! I had a painful time working on my Dodge Ram during one repair and realized I needed a ball end hex set. And now Torx Plus comes up!

I perused several tool websites today. OTC Torx Plus sets are $30-40, tamper proof harder to get but still less than $50. Then I found a complete SK set for ~$110 USD, same set $150 in Canada :(. So many guys here have spoken highly of Snap On bit sockets, so I checked out their website: :scared: $335.75 for Torx Plus, and $329.20 for tamper proof!! Yikes!

I think it'll be OTC for me. Lisle does make Torx Plus, but I wasn't overly impressed with how easily I broke one before. Anyway, here's some picks of what I have so far:
