Can you daisy chain sub panels?

I have a 200 amp main panel, and plan to install a subpanel in the opposite corner of my basement since it will shorten the wire runs for various circuits I am adding in the basement and back yard.

Now for my question: If I ran the proper sized wiring and box for a 100 amp subpanel inside the house, could I daisy chain off that subpanel (using the proper breaker in that panel) and run wiring to my detached garage for a 60 amp subpanel? Or do I have to run both subpanels directly off my main 200 amp panel?

You can daisy chain.

Run a 4 wire cable from your main to the first subpanel and then 4 wire to any other subpanels after that. The subpanel in the house will not need any additional ground rods but the detached garage subpanel will. Remember to isolate any neutral/ground bonds in the subpanels.

Our house was daisy chained, a sub-sub ran the knob & tube lighting, another ran the wall outlets (also knob & Tube.) A third ran the newest addition to the house. THe sub ran the new lighting circuits (along with the sub-subs), the kitchen, etc. I had a second sub for the shop & basement. As long as your local code doesn't prohibit it, you're golden.

Thanks very much for the information. The basement renovation is the priority for now and I need to put in the 1st sub-panel and get it all wired up. Once that project is finished I can add the 2nd sub-panel and start working on figuring out what circuits I'll need in the garage.
