This is my great grandfathers old toolbox. my uncle said to make an offer on it but I have no clue where to start. It's a red a silver craftsman 10 drawer with a "garage door" at the bottom. It has the craftsman logo underlined by a triangle. It would only let me upload this one picture, sorry.

This is my great grandfathers old toolbox.

Thanks for making me feel older than usual today.

Assuming what you've got is a 6-drawer top box and a 5-drawer roller cabinet, it's the same as the stack I bought new in 1972:

They also made a 3-drawer roller cabinet IIRC.

Look inside the top till, in the left side compartment near the front for a date stamp. It will have a month and year marking. For the roller cabinet, look on the front uprights near the bottom, on the right or left side of the door.

Those were pretty good boxes in their day, as Craftsman box quality goes. If they're just dirty, by the look of your photo, I'd say $125 to $150 tops, and considerably less than that if there's any rust or damage, or if the drawer slides aren't in good shape. I wouldn't take anywhere near that for mine, but it's in nearly-new condition.

The other thing to consider is the historical value, if you knew your great-grandfather or not, or if you want to have something of his. Frankly, I think your uncle should just give them to you, unless he's got a son or grandson who might want them.

Put on yer Sunday suit and comb your hair, then buy it flowers and take it dancing. :lol_hitti

I figured someone was going to say that

I found the date code on the top just a little bit ago 2-72. As far as the dirt it's mostly dust and hay from birds building nests in the rafters (luckily they didn't poop on it) there's some surface rust but nothing some sanding won't take away.

Slightly off topic, but I also found an old snap-on 1/2 drive laying next to the toolbox...also found a rusty fish hook with my finger...It won't let me upload the picture off my phone but it says no. 71-M on the handle, however, the detent/ratchet lever is missing

Agree with WWIIJeep, $125-180 tops would be good in the open market. Depending on condition, drawer liners, rust, keys? Any family discount from the uncle?

I think $100 would be good for both parties.

The bottom box is nice being 5* drawers plus an open section, but the top box is kinda small only being 4 (I only count full length) drawers.

*I don't understand the 10 drawers. The bottom should have either 3 or 5 drawers, plus the fold down door. So total should be 9 or 11 drawers.

Yeah, it's a 9 drawer, I was trying to count the drawers off the top of my head and I guess I added one

Ok, so it is a 3 drawer bottom then?

If that is the case then I think the open market value would be around $100 to maybe $120 top end if it was in good condition. To me that is just not that big of a box. With only 3 drawers on the bottom. The 5 + open would be much more desirable. As it is there is ~2700 in^2 of storage space.

Fun fact. According to the 1973 craftsman catalog, the 6 drawer top and 3 drawer bottom sold together as a set for $149.99. But I think there was a typo in the catalog as it lists a 7 drawer bottom. Combined weight of ~200lbs.
