My father in law heard I was looking for a vise and said he had an extra one he found at his new house I could have. So he gave me this one, it's a 4 inch vise with a neat looking pipe holder built in. Or at least I think that's what it's for. It's two half circles that move on the dynamic jaw. It looks like it must if been painted over or something because there are literally no distinguishing names or numbers that I can find. Any idea who made this and it's COO?

PigPen welcome to Garage Journal because it looks like this is your first post. interesting vise and yes those jaws are set up to hold regular and odd shaped items. what part of the world are you from which might help us?

It looks a little too old to be Chinese, but might be Taiwan or made in Japan. or could be European. also if you can weigh it that might help to see if has any heft to it because it looks like a 25 pound vise.

looks like a keeper so maybe take it apart and clean it up and give it a new coat of paint or just put some new grease on the screw and mount it and start using it.

Thanks for the welcome Drives! Been lurking a long time but thought if finally post with this question.Just weighed it and it's a 20 pound vise. Do you think it will be ok for a general purpose vise? I am worries those half circles will get in the way in the long run. I am from the US. More specifically Virginia, but got the vise from a old farm in South Carolina.

that vise is interesting and will do some jobs that a regular vise wont do so until you find another vise i would say maybe pull out the dynamic jaw (unscrew it all the way out and don't drop it), grease the screw and the parts of the slide that rub against the static jaw, put it back in carefully, and mount it to the end of your bench and use it.

of course you can maybe do a full restore and there are many restore threads of vises on GJ to help you try and figure out something if you are stuck or just post a question or PM me or one of the vise guys and we'll try to help if we are available and can.

also to keep the rust down some on your vise you probably have some WD 40 hanging around to spray on a rag and wipe it down that you'll have to do often or read and learn better ways to do that with bare steel like using linseed oil and other products. or give it a new paint job.

good luck and if you are a member on GJ long you'll probably be looking for a big old US vise for the other end of your bench because there are a lot of vise guys here showing some great pictures of the choices.
