Can you identify this vise part?

I received this little vise a few weeks ago in a tool lot. I have never seen one before. It looks like it bolts onto another piece of equipment. The only markings are "Made in USA."

Can anyone tell me what it mounts to? It is kind of cool. Looks to be vintage.

I'm thinking that it is just to bolt it to a workbench or desk.

That's what I thought initially, but the bottom has these grooves that look like they slide into a bigger piece, and the bottom is not a flat surface to clamp onto a desktop.

Okay, I spotted some more markings on the side of it. It says 23 on top, the next line says 5246-2, and there is a triangle with an "A" inside. Allied perhaps?

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback guys! I think I will go ahead and mount it the same way that guy did! I appreciate the feedback :)

Sir, is that the original color? The reason I asked is that I recently ran into a formula for a bare metal wax made of beeswax/turpentine mixed melted with graphite. When rubbed onto a hot vise and wiped when cold it makes a metallic color similar to that.

Have you discovered what the base slides into? Is this base designed for multiple tools to slide in and lock?

What if some GJ member had that clamp piece in his scrap bin and this thread allowed him to figure what it was for?
