I wish I had better body hammers. I use a cheap Princess Auto set I bought more than a decade ago, but I put on hickory handles, polished the faces and cleaned up all the casting flaws. They work, but I have to polish the faces pretty frequently if I don't want to transfer dings and scratches onto the sheet metal - they're probably not hardened enough.

I stumbled across this on Amazon for ~$28:

71woGrmfDUL._AC_SL1500_.jpg

I think it looks promising - but I haven't got it yet. There's other Urrea bodywork hammers on Amazon, but they're priced much higher. It's just this 1427 model that seems "cheap" - and it's probably my favorite pattern anyway.

Urrea is a terrible name for the English-speaking market, but it's actually a Mexican pro tool brand. Long ago it was owned by Proto and the tools were sold as "Proto Mex". I'm guessing that's why this "1427" Urrea bodywork hammer is the same pattern as the Proto 1427. There's a few tools in Urrea's product like that are indistinguishable from old Proto designs.

No idea if its built the same as the old proto 1427, but I figured it was worth a gamble.
Funny coincidence, I just bought this hammer. Should be delivered today.
I’ll post some pictures and my impressions when it arrives.

Received the hammer today.
It’s serviceable but certainly not as nice as the photos online.
The face is rough and the finishing is not great. My biggest complaint is that the peen seems to be ground on a slight angle. I’m sure I can clean it up with a belt sander. Tag says Made in Mexico.
I took some pictures with another of my hammers for comparison

Thanks, Ill get one next week.

I am always having to beat things on my vise.
I got mine this week. It was a challenge, I had to ask three staff where the vise was located. No one knew. Finally all I got is they should be over there and the computer says there are two of them. A clerk and I went on the hunt. They were on the shelf with all the marking on the box turned around on the bottom shelf. The price on the shelf was wrong, Now I know why they were on clearance - no on knew they were there.

I spent today playing with the anvil while listening to this.

That's too bad. The grinding texture on the faces - I could live with that. Maybe you shouldn't have to, but sanding and polishing hammer faces is something I'm familiar with. If they didn't bother getting the peeing end square though, that's a bigger hassle to correct and makes me more suspicious that they got the other details correct - critically, the heat treat.

I stumbled across this website while looking for an English wheel: https://sosoutils.com/

I'm trying to decide if that's a legit site. I think so, it passes my typical checks:
  • whois says the site registered in 2015 - so it's not brand new,
  • there are some mentions of it on forums (French forums, but it's un magasin Québécois, so that's fine)
  • It has working links, proper descriptions and an active Facebook page, and
  • There's a physical store, visible on streetview:
1000007108.jpg

It appears to be reselling Harbor Freight tools, but here in Canada. Most items seem to have "good" prices, but not crazy - but then a few things just seem quite cheap to me.

Here's the US General mechanics cart, for example, for $225.

Bauer bandfile for $50 seems low.

There's enough stuff at regular-sounding prices to convince me it's probably real. If so, kinda cool to have a source for Habor Freight tools in Canada.

Price is basicall "at par" with US, but note they're not actually brand new:

Next time in PAL look for "The Princess Auto Story" in hard bound form. It is a freebie. 423 pages of their story.

They have started sending out catalogues again, got my second one today.

I was in Rona today, and the Wiha bitratchet set was on clearance for $30.

I already had 3 bitratchets. If I didn’t already have a very nice Wera set I would have bought this sooner. For $30 it is a bargain, IMO. Bitratchets were a game changer for me when I got my first one. This is a very nice one with a nice extension and good bit selection in a very nice metal box. I’d buy another for a present for someone if this wasn’t the last one in the store.

Wiha bits were also on clearance - most packages worked out to $1/piece.

I know it’s tough to get the average Joe to buy anything higher-end, but I am a little sad to see this discontinued. But, since it is, grab one before they’re gone.

At KMS. Makes me wonder what the secret price actually is.

Also, I think these are great. I added a pocket clip to mine.

I was there yesterday and I didn't see them - pity. I walked out of there with $70 bucks worth of trinket and baubles for Christmas stockings. Looking at their website they only have small numbers left in each store which says they are all sold out and the ones they show in stock were shoplifted. I hope they come back, I'd buy 6+.

Are they any good I wonder?
They all seem to be about the same. E.g. Vevor, Grizzly, Craftex, King... likely all made in the same factories.

Some of the more expensive versions might be spec'd with larger motors or include an pre-sale inspection. Plus different paint and decal schemes of course.

Personally I think I'd prefer to buy it from Princess Auto because of their generous return policy. That might be different if you don't have a store nearby.

That said, it's a mini mill. If you're making small parts it should do that well. If you're making big parts or need to take deep cuts to work fast, it's probably not large or ridgid enough.

How much was it? Not that I have cash lying around for a mill to put in the garage I don't own...
Gone now, but I think it was a little less than $600. Someone correct me if I got that wrong. I checked the competition and saw Princess Auto's regular price was a little higher than Busy Bee, for example, but the clearance price was at least a couple hundred below the lowest I could find.
Got em!

There's a craftsman pro V similar 3/8 metric socket set goes at $99. If it drops I could be in....
Oooo! I will have to look for that next time I go in-person. Or search for the online listing I suppose... I don't want to miss out! The V-series stuff is nice.
In a way it’s good those wrenches are SAE. Much less tempting to me than metric… although I have more than enough of both…
The plastic case, when it bears USAG or Facom branding, costs about as much as Princess Auto wants for the whole V-series wrench set. It's an amazing deal as far as I'm concerned, though I appreciate there's less value to a person who already owns enough wrenches.

I do too... but couldn't resist. I also have the metric V-series ratchet wrench set and I use that as my portable set. I figured it would be nice to have something similar in SAE. They're nice wrenches! Probably a little shorter than some, thinner too. Excellent finishing. The case is surprisingly useful and easy to manipulate.

This isn’t a specific deal per-se, but wanted to share my positive experience buying through Summit Racing. They give you an all in price (shipping, duties, customs etc) with free shipping on an order over $300. Their prices are lowest I’ve found on a lot of tools and performance parts and with free shipping and known duties (which are absolutely punitive if buying on your own) makes this now a viable option.

I’ve been burned a few times buying from the states and avoid at all costs unless no other option. But now between them and Amazon there’s hope for us Canadians :p.

Also had good experiences (Canadian outfits): Tenaquip and MPR Tools

Thanks JradM for this thread BTW. Very helpful for us in the north!

100% agree. I’ve had only good experiences with Summit.
Their prices are good and while the duties are excessive at least you know what you’re getting into.
I bought two T-shirt’s from the US, paid tax and shipping with the order. Two weeks after delivery I received an invoice for additional brokerage for more than the shirts cost 😡.
I don’t have that happen with summit.

When a "Deal" is not a deal.

This Proto box at Princess. SKU 9297631. Metal felt thin and the price!! $1800 . I wonder if they charge extra for the dent lol. Really dont like the drawers and latches on these boxes at all.

Allegedly $8700 USD regular price. (lol) Proto Pn. J564542-10SG No way Id pay anything close to that for this box, its just not that level of quality IMHO.

Likely could have got it for less if, but it was busy and I didnt want to bug the manager for something I wouldnt be buying.

It's a steal compared to paying at Toyota for $9,519.69
https://shop.toyotaforklift.com/en/...eel-tool-roller-cabinet-10-drawers/p/33602251

At the super high Grainger for a deal at $8,635.53
https://www.grainger.com/product/PROTO-Rolling-Tool-Cabinet-Gloss-53GM77

If you say that it looks cheap, then that a home owner garage box that should be on sale for $500

I dunno about $500 if it was undamaged. But its definitely not a $9000 box either! Maybe $500 for the damaged display one.

Id say it felt about the same quality as the Milwaukee at HD, and should be priced about the same (maybe a bit more because MiUSA). It had that same texture powdercoat (paint?) as the Milwaulkee, definitely not a fine paint finish like youd see on a truck brand box.

Certainly not Snapon quality despite its price.

That's disappointing - I don't want to believe it! I was pretty excited to see a Proto tool box at Princess Auto.

Maybe I'll keep an eye out for a clearance opportunity.

You might like it, I imagine your local PA will get one to sell? At deep discount, $500-1000 I think it would be fine. The regular retail price is laughable.

Funny thing is looking at the specs, it should be better, but looking at it in person was a let down to me.

Figure out what torque range you need.
If a trip across the border is a reasonable outing then go to Harbor Freight.
Otherwise Tekton.

If the Maximum goes on sale it's ok. The plastic handle broke on mine after several years of professional use. I have another as a beater at home for doing 100km re-torques etc. It will probably last a long time in an occasional use/DIY setting.

Whatever you buy store it correctly (20% of max is usually safe).
