My CT has some Wera torque wrenches that nobody is buying. They're getting pretty dusty in the cage.

CanTire still has some Wera in stock, although that seems to have been thinning.

Wera Christmas items are not a bad fit for PA as special buys. Even knowing they bring in special buys of higher end stuff wouldn’t be a bad strategy, but that’s a little different than a come and go change of strategy.
Totally forgot about CT. My store definitely doesnt promote Wera. They just did a major reset that I havent had the chance to check out fully so maybe thats changed

Does anyone remember what the CT site used to be before the previous version? I think it was during the pandemic that they changed it, and it was not for the better. I thought they would fix some of the issues but it's been pretty much the same.

I find HD's site to be decent, but Rona's site *****. Especially the search feature and their inventory lookup. I really wish they'd fix that since my local Rona is my go to store.

But I feel that CT is going the way that TSC did, with more clothes/toys/etc and less hardware/automotive/tool focus. I ordered some maintenance parts last night for my wife's Edge, and some of the markups on CT products vs what Rock Auto is selling them for is ridiculous. I could order 3 wix oil filters for the price that CT sells one regular duty Mobil filter for.

If I'm shopping CT, it's usually because I need something now. But some of the recent experiences have really soured me. Check the website, shows several in inventory. Go to the store and can't find it. Finally find some high school kid that works there, and they can't even find it. Ends up being a complete waste of time. I'm more likely to go to PA, HD or Home Hardware instead.

This happens a fair bit. Luckily our CT employs almost exclusively local people and if it is an item that only has a few showing on the website, I request that one of the kids go grab it and physically bring it to the front and once the customer service person has it in her hands then I say I'll be there in 20 minutes to get it.

I do have a mobility problem, they know that, and they are more than willing to help.

A quick aside...they have a real sparkplug of a kid working there in automotive. He's 30-ish, drives a 62 Pontiac as his good car, and knows his stuff. I called down there one day and asked for an upper rad hose for a 65 Corvair, and he didn't hesitate to tell me to behave. This is the same guy who took around an hour to locate plugs, points, and wires for a 52 Hudson. He's that good.

Dang that’s rare these days. I see you’re from my home province, which town is this store in?

Wow that’s awesome,
A friend was doing a tuneup on his ‘68 Chevy on a weekend and asked the Canadian Tire parts counter for points and a condenser. They said they didn’t sell air conditioning parts and sent him away 😂

I don’t need another torque wrench…

It is a Proto. I would like one in that range. Not sure if the build quality stacks up to the US made. So what is the probability it gets any cheaper?

(I’m not sure if I’m asking to be talked into or out of that one)

I bought both this one and the smaller 30 to 150 ftlb version. This is the best price that I've seen so far (I paid $119). I haven't used them extensively but they seem to be quality pieces. Facom sourced and made in Italy. Both have removeable ratchet heads that can be replaced with crowsfoot style inserts, that could be handy for torquing hydraulic fittings or other hard to access items. Normally I'm not a plastic handle guy but these are pretty nice and the viewing window for the torque setting is quite good, with positive detents on each delineation. For $99 CAD these are a good deal.

The one on sale is the 150ftlb.

I picked it up on the way home today. I’ve wanted that size for a while, because I find my 250 sometimes a tad awkward.

I’d looked at buying an eTork in the US on their Black Friday sale. With tax this is little more, but a known brand and a Canadian store. And cheaper than eTork here. And most anything cheaper is - well - cheaper.

The deal seeker in me wanted to wait for clearance, or for a New Years coupon, but I thought better to get one before it is the end of the pile, and pick on that didn’t seem to have been played with.

Can’t wait to try it out. I don’t always retorque lugs, but it’s been 2 weeks since I put on the winter tires, so perfect time to.

The bolt cutter shows in stock at my local store (and at clearance price).

Might be cheaper in-person though. It shows $40 for me too - but there was a stack of them marked at $20 in the store. Scanned at $33 for whatever reason, but they manually adjusted.

Stacking savings at cutting edge cutlery:
  • 20% off in-cart for their boxing week sale items (I.e whatever the sale price is, it's 20% less once you put it in your cart)
  • 5% extra for email subscribers with code BOXINGDAY5 (but I don't think you actually have to sign up - just use the code).
I think that's today-only. Free shipping too, at least if you spend enough. 😄

I bought something slightly silly: the Spyderco Manix 2 SALT in Magnacut. I kayak a lot in the summer and wanted a salt-series knife for some time. Actually thought I would buy the Para 3 when it it was available, but with the discounts... the Manix was cheap enough to convince me.

Anybody have experience with the Carlyle tool boxes? 24" deep seems nice, 18 guage instead of 22 guage like Canadian tire sells. I'm going to need to pick something up for work fairly soon and these ones caught my eye.

Had them in school, they were fine. Better than the CT option. At that price I would have considered them when I was shopping. In the end I went with the G2S/Tobeq 41" instead.

I’m no expert on toolboxes, so just take these as thoughts…

If a CanTire option is in the running, I’d also take a look at the Husky options at HD. My sister has one ias a kitchen island, and I’m quite impressed with the construction. I think it’s 18” deep, but pretty good bang for the buck. I’d like more shallow drawers than hers, but there are a couple of models.

If you have a decent Gray dealer you may also want to quote one of theirs. The red Pro+ I think are still made here, similar to the old Pro with roller slides rather than friction slides.

I live in a small town, so Napa and CT are kind of the only local options. I do have some time before I'm going to need it, so I can always do some shopping in Edmonton. I'm kind of hoping for a step up from mastercraft, but I'm not sure that I want to spend what the Gray ones are worth.

Must be a low end kitchen a high end one would have Snapon.

I don't know a bout Gray. Their business is government "buy Canadian and Industrial guy spending OPM (Other people's money) In Calgary Gray doesn't have any retail outlets anymore, just industrial wholesalers to the trade.

lol. It’s actually awesome. But I kinda wanted to replace the Husky logo with the emblem from a Kitchenaid mixer.

Their distribution definitely is industrial, which isn’t the easiest. But to be fair, other than CT and Napa and HD there aren’t that many places for average Joe purchases.

It’s worth looking in their flyer. And checking again in the new year. Just to see what they offer. I bought a Gray top to go with my grandfathers Beach bottom. At the time I think I paid about 3 times the cost of a Mastercraft 5 or 6 drawer 12” deep top for a Gray 12 drawer 18” deep.

It’s a good box, great drawer configuration, and not tinny. At times I wish I had a wider box to fit my torque wrench, but that was a limitation of the 26” Beach. And I’d seriously consider a wider Husky plus a 26” Gray top as a good way to leave a bit of bench workspace.

Depends on what you’re looking for.

Where are you finding the Carlyle boxes? I haven't seen those before.

Honestly if you are anywhere close to the US border I'd consider a trip down there to look at the US General boxes. From what I see on here they look like a good box. I'm just not overly impressed with the more consumer end box offerings up here lately.

Tekz 3 pc pry bar set on clearance. No great savings - the $8.88 "special buy" price was already cheap, but $7.13 is even cheaper.

1000007956.jpg

This looks like the pry bar set I like though - except that was a four pack for $10. They're strong and rigid. I hope this is just clearing out the last round and not the last time Princess Auto will carry them. It's a good product for little money.

Fluke multimeters seem to be on clearance at my local Rona. I’m not in the market as I have a few, but it’s a good deal for anyone who is. A 117 is on for $251 which is a little over $100 off. There are about half a dozen models. Online pricing aligns on some, but not all.

For what it's worth, I just got a Neptune 4 for $259 (it's $269 right now).

A1 Mini 180*180*180
Neptune 225*225*265
Bambu A1 256*256*256

If you want the bigger volume but can't afford the A1 proper it's worth considering. I can't speak to long term reliability but the first 2 or 3 prints have turned out great. But the consensus is that over time it will probably take a bit more adjusting/tinkering than the bambu.

I pulled the trigger on the A1 Mini right after typing that, and being ready to print out of the box and hassle free long-term operation are the reasons I chose it. At this point, I'm buying it as an appliance to make a bunch of stuff that would cost more to buy than the printer itself. I have about as much interest in tweaking one of these as I do my laser printer, and most of the stuff I'll make doesn't need to be perfect since they will be mostly tools.
