I stopped in at the local Peavy tonight,
I think they had more going out of business signs than they had merchandise.

Things were marked down 10-30%,
Not many deals and lots of picked over shelves.

They also had a sign that the gas bottle program is on hold, whatever that means.

One of the big problems for Peavey was that they were neither the grocery store nor the convenience store:

A quarter of the store was stuff like plumbing, electrical, fasteners, and such. While they were more rural, you could buy an electrical outlet cheaper just down the street in most towns they were in. And you wouldn’t buy a bunch there. But they weren’t often convenient for the one or two.

The selection was okay, but someone should really price things like Lee Valley. Buy one $4. Buy 2 it’s 3:50. Buy 5 it’s $3. Buy 10+ and it’s $2. Get the convenience store and supermarket customers.

I shopped at Peavey on occasion, but there were very few people in there. When it was TSC, it seemed to be busier. Online shopping has also killed off any businesses that were straddling the line in my opinion. Buying everything on Amazon has been a big problem for a lot of brick and mortar retailers. But since they opened in Ontario, I thought the 2 I went in to were always disorganized, messy, and short staffed.

I will miss Peavy as they were my go-to for a few things - children's work clothing and gloves in particular. They were a supliment to Princess Auto and an alternative to China T...er...CANADIAN tire. They overexpanded just as Covid hit and screwed up a lot of markeplaces. Went over on Thursday to scope out any buys but very little discount (less than their normal sales disc) and had to wait for a parking spot.

Hopefully, PA, CT, Rona will getting more local stuff. HD is already 100% US and won't change.

What are some Canadians brands for these stores to start stocking?

For DIY stuff,, Home Hardware, Rona, and local guys like Lute's have a lot of Canadian stuff.

Picqic and Megapro screwdrivers are great products, Canadian owned, mostly made in Canada depending on model.

Id love to see Canadian Tire bring in more Canadian product, like Gray tools, or even more Euro tools from Wera or the other Germans.

It is not going to happen. I wanted to get a toolbox full of Gray and actually bought several things. I got another hand full at auctions.

There is not a retail location in Calgary. KMS stopped carrying them a couple of years ago. The only places that carry them are the industrial wholesalers where the customers are spending company money. I also saw their rolling tool carts at a hospital that I am sure has a buy canadian policy.

My dream of a tool box full of Gray and Snapon is waiting for a lottery win.

Gray is pretty much Grainger (Acklands) only I think? And definitely spendy.

If you can't buy a complete set of older Gray wrenches at a farm auction, FB marketplace or a garage sale for $50 or less you aren't trying hard enough..I bought 2 sets 1/4-1 1/4, a prybar and a couple tire irons for less than $70. Garage sales especially....

I am very willing to buy used from garage sales etc. But the reality is that this doesn't support the company.... now having said that, I am too cheap to buck up the $ for Gray

Great deal on right now for Zep hand cleaner @ Bumper to Bumper (Professional). $35 for the jug of handcleaner (sale says TKO, but my branch gave me the better Reach for same price) and $15 for the wall mounted pump made in Ireland of all places!. The pump alone is worth $50 if bought separate.

IMHO this is in the top 3 best hand cleaners out there. Way better than Fast Orange. This has been one of my favourite hand cleaners going back more than 20 years. At this price its a no-braner. To give an idea of how sweet a deal this is, a gallon of Reach is $80 at Acklands, or $70 at Tenequip. Its under $50 at Amazon, but you need to buy 4 gallons (!) to get that price

My ex-employer Motion, was a dealer for Gray and their import line Dynamic. Gray isnt cheap, but believe it or not, its not the dealer making the money, theyre wasnt much margin on Gray. Its expensive to do that forging work in Canada.

Gray does some pretty good sales through their website. Their sale prices are super competitive.

Anyone see the parallel between Amazon growing rapidly and the loss of stores similar to Peavey?

Absolutely. I do everything I can to stick to local stores. Rarely buy anything on Amazon, or Rock Auto unless I have to. The problem is that often I have found Canadian stores like NAPA Canada absolutely goon you for parts. I don't mind paying more to buy local, but I have found the difference in some of the pricing just crazy. However, there are other online CDN retailers like Parts Avatar, and The Wrench Monkey I have used often with comparable pricing.

It’s tough sometimes to buy Canadian or from a Canadian retailer.
I wanted a cast iron griddle.
$40 in the US,
$160 at Peavy Mart or Bass Pro in Canada.
And no matter where I buy it it’s made in china.

Yep. I've always tried to support Canadian but that has its limits. I'm not shopping local and paying 4x the price for something I can get online.

I agree. I had a preference of buying Canadian and then US. I responded to another thread something from AliExpress or temu or some Chinese site. The chinese site and the American Sites were selling the same product, except the American was three times as much.

I needed a set of three gauges for my skid steer. I ordered them thinking they were coming from China via Canada Post. I was surprised when they came UPS within a week from somewhere in Torontoland. The Chinese vendor is listed Teemu or Aliexpress in China and ships from their Toronto location that I am sure supplies Amazon and OTHERS.

Thanks for sharing the other CDN retailers as I’ve never heard of either. I try to keep my Amazon purchases to a minimum, especially now that their prices are rising rapidly. Lately we have been looking a little deeper at the labelling. My wife and I were at Costco and she was looking for an item that there are only 2 options. The spec she was looking for was not what she wanted so we will be buying the item elsewhere even though the cost will be higher.
Funny story for you guys. I purchased an old school microscope at an online auction for my Grandson. Since I was only using auction supplied pictures, so won sight unseen. The refracting mirror was missing and a poor quality bubbled flat mirror was ****. Couldn’t find it locally, or should say didn’t know where to even look for it. So off to Amazon. Found a variety for sale from $5-$20 plus. Found one and send the seller an email checking that the mirror was concave or not. Answer came back that one side was concave the other side flat. I’m not on Prime member so I got my daughter to order it for me as she sends her packages to our house anyway. I added in the tax and gave her $7 which she said was okay but her Mom said take the $7 Taxes in 😉

Since it was in my shopping cart I got notice that that mirror was now $14.99. I found that funny but didn’t take it out of my cart. About 2 weeks later I check my cart and the mirror was now $20. I don’t know if my email to the seller thought he had something special or not as most of the other mirrors stated a concave mirror which triggered me. So basically a quadrupling of price in about a month span.
Amazon is not exactly a cheap place to shop anymore. The Quebec Amazon distribution centres are being shut down supposedly to being unionized. The big B must be needing some rocket fuel money, I guess.

Went to Peavy today, figuring I need some shelves - and they just sent that email advertising 40% off.

Although there were signs for "up to 40% off" in the store, nearly every department had 10% signs instead. Still, I was surprised how barren the shelves were. Lots of the shelving units have been removed (the store ones, not the type I was shopping for).

If they're selling stuff at 10% off, obviously that's the right move. I left with nothing though. 10% might be a deal of I need something, but it's not enough to motivate unnecessary purchasing.

E.g. I thought about a Dewalt polesaw, but $240 is regular price and 10% off... probably get that during any sale.

Nevertheless, the parking lot was full and people lined the aisles.

Some people are fooled by the Sale sign.

One friend assumes everything is automatically cheap if it’s on sale.
He would happily buy an item for $50 if it was 10% off over the same item for $40 regular price somewhere else 😆.
Ignorance is bliss I guess

At one time blower motors where made practically locally (20 minutes from my house local). Pricing for a blower motor for my square body was more than double the price of the four seasons blower on Rockauto even including shipping. I order from rockauto, I was surprised to see it was made in canada, and shocked to see the blower motor was stamped from the local factory .
Sad state of affairs when I need to buy my made in Canada parts that have travelled umpteen miles, made two border crossings, pay for shipping, pay for exchange rate and still come out ahead of buying from any of the local auto parts suppliers for a part that was made within spitting distance of my house.

Not as crazy as it seems at first blush.

At least for my company, pricing has much more to do with sales volume than freight cost.

Was just in the Calgary north store and saw the lenox cutters priced at 19.99.
Didn't check the other stuff as I have all I need.
