KMS flyer. I haven’t looked at it yet. Their last flyer I picked up some Eastwood Powder Coating items for a new rabbit hole experiment.
Free shipping under certain conditions. I’m under the impression they started out in Abbotsford BC and hopefully working their way east.

Can anyone find me a half decent 3/8dr torque wrench under $100? Starting at 5 (or 10) ft-lb, up to 50 (or higher)
I’ve been keeping an eye out for something, and I don’t really have an answer.

I don’t know if they’re accurate or not, but I don’t really like any of the ones with the screw and hex nut on the end. They just seem generically cheap. The ones with the pull-back locking collar always seem better made.

I’ve used 1/2” drive of both Maximum and Mastercraft, and found them to be quite good. So if you want a 100ft.lb. model, you probably can’t do better for under $100.

My main issue with those is that they are either 250in.lb. (21ft.lb) or 100ft.lb. A lot of what I want it for is spark plugs, caliper slide pins, and other fasteners that are 25-40 ft.lb. A 100ft.lb. wrench works , but not as good at the low end of the range, and for anything much past 50ft.lb I would use my 1/2” drive.. I’d rather a 50ft.lb size.

Speaking of Proto screwdrivers. I looked at this one in the store. The handle is only the size of a large mushroom ! Ratchet mechanism was smooth. Only had 2 in bags, and 1 that was ripped open. Almost bought it, but dont really need yet another screwdriver.

I picked up one of these. It's pretty nice. Mac sells the same set for like $100. Definitely a steal for $20.

I originally had my heart set on the Williams ratcheting screwdriver, but Lowe's had the Craftsman V-Series version of the Facom ATCL.2 as a part of the Christmas deal last year for $30. Definitely higher quality than most box store tools--it's my favorite screwdriver anymore. Smooth, and a pretty high tooth count.

So, Proto includes the belt pouch like Mac? Guess it's one I need to get on order! They're $60 in the US, so at $20 Canadian--a steal by far.

Which craftsman is that?

According to Craftsman, it's the CMHT68142V; V-Series Ratcheting Screwdriver with X-Tract Techology bits.

Personally, my favorite feature is the T-handle design. Facom (maybe USAG too) and Mac have models with a ratcheting t-handle feature as well, but it's very expensive.

The way V-series, Proto, and Facom is showing up at PA, I wouldn’t be surprised if you get a chance in the future…

Thank-you.

That sounds like a half decent deal. I suspect even the low end wrenches can do the job, but may not be well calibrated. Even if it’s not high-end, CDI is reputable so it should be accurate, if not fancy.

When TTC tested torque wrenches, I think the takeaway was that they all basically test within their stated parameters - even the cheap ones.

That doesn't mean there's no reason to get a nice one (even Mastercraft round head ratchets will meet the ANSI standard - but we don't all stop with those right?) But you're paying for things like tighter tolerance windows, better finishing, stronger smoother ratcheting, etc.

I listed got one of them. It's CDI MiUSA and looks very old school - scale doesn't have NM.

Will be trying it out this evening.

Same. I actually under torqued a pulley bolt and lost the pulley. Spec was 35 ft.lbs +/- 7 or something...I guessed poorly. Ever since I have been keeping half an eye open for something to get me into the ball park.

I think that’s right.

I was given one of the cheap generic torque wrenches to play with and see if I could make it work. I took it apart, and either it had been unwound too far and something misaligned, or there was nothing wrong with it and it was just too soft of a click at the range it was used at.

I rigged up a sleeve to turn it with another wrench, and got both adjusted to click at the same torque. Readings were pretty close. But there were two reasons I definitely didn’t like what would be a perfectly serviceable wrench:
1. The engravings weren’t clean. So it required a little care to set.
2. At the bottom end of the adjustment it seemed finnicky for how far you should or shouldn’t back it off.

They’re not all that complicated of a device. But the finish details are worth spending a bit more on.

Technically I believe the accuracy is a percentage of the full scale. So a 100ft.lb. wrench with +/-6% would be +/-6ftlb at 30 or at 100. The error in the spring should scale linearly, but the error in the cam and the free length of the spring would be absolute, so that may mean +/-6ftlb at full scale and 4 or 5 (which is 15% or more) at minimum setting. Adequate enough for a lot, but I still want a midsize wrench.

Would be ideal but I don't have any plans across the border planned.

I just got one of these but it arrived and the locking screw does nothing so the handle spins while trying to use it.

May be the Lexivon 3/8 torque wrench on Amazon for $55? I remember watching a Youtube clip about torque wrench comparison, probably by Project Farm. The Lexivon that was tested maintained the claimed accuracy after repeated torqueing actions while some of the others in the same price range lost accuracy.

just picked up a set of centre drills from PAL. On sale for $10 for 5 sizes. They’re 60 degree, which is the standard for lathe centres, but are also great as starter drills - they are way more rigid, so they don’t skate around.

I am partial to 82 degree centre drills to use as countersinks for screws, but that’s another level of specialized.

While in the store I also noticed some interesting new items:
- 8020 - basically the Meccano for making jigs and certain types of tooling. Will be interesting to see if manufacturers buy enough to keep it around for us home build types.
- clecos. I have a set from an aircraft surplus place, but otherwise I’d be in.
- Wera screwdrivers. The standard 6 piece set and an insulated set. People are divided on the handles, but I like them and I really like the laser tips, and I like that they are a quality driver you can get in Robertson.

Cool that PA is adding Wera. I love my Wera drivers. I hope its a permanent thing. They had a couple sets at xmas but not much else.

I will say theyre going to have to get their pricing in line if they want to be successful. Case in point. $30 in the difference is pretty significant.

Also cool to see Klein added. Raises some questions about what HD is going to do with the brand? I noticed one of the local HDs has reduced their Klein selection considerably. Princess' pricing seems to be right in line with HD which is great.

The 6 piece Robertson / Phillips / common Wera screwdriver set was $50. So right in line with CanTire. And if it does go on sale at all it should match or beat Amazon. And we are better supporting local bricks & mortar if it’s at all close.

IMO they are worth the $10/ea, but there is a bit of a select audience that knows $50 for 6 good ones is a better deal than $30 for 20 meh or worse drivers.

Who was asking for a 3/8" torque wrench deal?

9434564_A0CG_00_01.jpg

The photos make the text on the shaft hard to read, but it looks like a Proto 6004DR is coming up for sale in the next Price Wrecker - $84.

Here it is on Grainger's website for $387.01 (which, to be fair, is likely overpriced - Grainger is high unless you have an account). Looks to be about $190 in the USA.

I'll be getting one to match my 1/2" Proto from the last sale.
That was me and this is perfect. And I really like that window for the Nm / ft-lb scales, way better than the usual Nm scale on the back.

Now I just need to remember to purchase one on Monday!

If it's a Proto, they say this is removable. Does that mean removable head, and anyone know where I can get the open-ended heads that don't require me to do the math to compensate for the torque difference?

Proto sells the wrench heads separately. They're not cheap though. It's the sort of thing you buy the one or two sizes you need or it gets way too expensive fast.

You can use standard torque adapters and crowsfoot wrenches with any torque wrench without math though, just place them 90-degrees to whatever you're torquing:

Shhh. Don’t say it too loud - I need them in stock for me to get one to match my 1/2” :D

40ftlb is a nice size, imo.

I had looked in the past for the crowfeet that could be put on the Proto torque wrenches, and didn’t find them on their website. Did anyone else have part numbers? Are they available from anyone else, or is it a Proto specific?

I’m going to guess that the heads on the 1/2” and 3/8” can be interchanged. While there likely isn’t often a need for that, I seem to remember using a 1/2” socket and adapter and 3/8” torque wrenches on a brake caliper not too long ago because of clearance reasons. Swapping heads might be a nicer alternative.

I noticed you can buy this Dewalt 5" ROS with 5ah battery and charger for $219 and get this compact router ($289 normally) for free at Home Depot. Because the router value is so high, the battery-return trick should make the ROS kit ~$94, should you decide you don't need the router.
p_1001515201.jpg
p_1001158113.jpg

I think retail for the ROS is around $139, but I've seen it for $114 before. Nevertheless, $94 with a battery and charger is much better.

Anyone notice any Dewalt chainsaw deals?

My garage burnt down about a week ago. I lost all my cordless stuff. I'm waiting for my insurance company to decide what they'll pay before doing anything drastic, but my yearly camping trip with my friends is coming up and I'll need a saw in the next couple weeks. I had the Flexvolt saw, but I think I might just make-do with the DCCS621 20v saw for the time-being.

Replying to myself for everyone's benefit - I stumbled across a possible pricing error at JCCayer. They've got the Dewalt DCCS674x2 kit for $629.00.

1000001515.jpg

That's the 14" top handle model. MSRP on the bare tool is $699, so the kit with two 9.0 Flexvolt packs ought to be considerably higher. Home Depot says $999.

I checked the model number like 3 times, but it matches up with the kit - and that's what the product listing and description says too.

got my Proto 40ftlb torque wrench

Interestingly although not surprisingly the removable head is a different size connection. Not that I think I’ll ever get the crowfeet for them, but FYI

Does seem like a nice piece

I see there is a 75ftlb Proto torque wrench in the next flyer. I’m pretty happy with the selection I now have, but I’m sure some folks here need one ;-)

It’s crazy to me how much of the better SBD stuff has showed up at PAL. Makes me wonder if there is anyone we could submit a wish list to… (and what would be on it? Facom locking pliers? Palm control ratchets? Facom ratcheting screwdriver?)

Here is an absolute steal for any of you that build farm implements or trailers or such - 5/8” x 2” bolts for $25 for 150 pieces (about 65 cents per pound)

The picture almost looks like thread cutting or thread forming bolts.

I haven’t seen them in person. But flange bolts or bolts that large tend to be better quality than the bubblegum type 1/4-20 furniture hardware….
These are the DeWalt TapFlex bolts.

I think you are probably SOL on the hard copy. I used to get PA flyer booklets by addressed mail and as a hard copy flyer. Now if I need a PA article I go up on line and then check it out, later taking a look at the flyer. If I have a flyer in the house it is likely I’ve picked it up at the store.
Another nail in the coffin of the postal service but then that is a totally different topic.

Looks like the next PAL sale has Gearwrench interchangeable head torque wrenches, with ratchet head and crowfeet. A 1/4” and a 3/8”. They don’t make me second guess my Proto purchases at all, but interesting to see.
