I can't find a decept drill press for a fair price anywhere

I wanted something like this:

But all that I see around here is cheap chinese ****... and I havent seen a single old drill press on cragslist in about 2 months

They may both be Chinese made but they appear to be a quality tool. I know of two good friends that have them and the like them.

Too expensive it seems... with all the discounts sears has been doing lately, that DP was coming out to like $250

I don't think there are very many domestic drill presses.. if any
I would LOVE to get my hands on a nice antique... but they just don't come up that often around here

It seems all of the commonly available DPs are variations on the same Chinese models. Some have extra "features" that increase the price.

I have a benchtop Craftsman that essentially the same as the $39 HF unit, but with a higher level of finish. Add a crankup table, worklight, and laser and it would be a clone of the Delta unit. Kind of depressing, actually.

I lucked out on an old Walker-Turner floor model a few weeks ago. I found it on Craigslist for cheap and it was only a couple of miles away. I really like good old North American cast iron.

IMO, it's a drill press. not a precision machine It will not hold a fine tolerance. That being said what are your requirements? Max hole size, material being drilled, size of material (throat size) (width from column to drill), bench or standing, usage.

The one thing I found that made a big difference to me was the quill stop setting. The drill presses that have a screw adjustment on the side with the 2 nuts were much better for setting the depth adjustments. The other style with the thumb screw on the handle do not work when you put a lot of pressure on the handle, they move out of adjustment.(When you are drilling something and you do not want to go thru )

Recommendations: Go for a drill press with a 3/4 hp or better, a 5/8 chuck, a standing unit, a name brand unit ( most are china) so your children can get parts for it. Almost all low to middle priced tools are made off shore. and some high priced ones are too. Unless you find a US made in someone's basement . Chances are it will be beat.

i use the largest benchtop model that Canadian tire has. of course its a chinese made DP but it does have a warranty. and lets be honest, just cause its made in china does not mean its junk. If its built to a certain spec, it will last and provide many years of good service. and when it dies, i'll go out and spend another 200$ and buy another one.

I really am happy with my Delta bench top. I don't use it for heavy duty stuff though. Just woodworking.

Deltas customer service is outstanding. A few years ago I bought a Delta Planer. I went to remove the blades and rounded off 3 of the small bolts that pressure fit against them. They were way too tight. These are strange looking. Its like a nut in the center of a threaded rod but all made together. Its a pressure fit deal and you can only take them out with an open end wrench. They even supply the wrench with the planer.

I called Delta and asked them what the deal was. They told me they had some come out that were put in way too tight and overnighted me a complete set of replacement bolts. I even got a call back from them in a couple of days to make sure I had received them.

Be lucky you live in Canada and not some other country where the only good tools come from Asia

Mine is Asian made with different speeds for different needs

HOw do you figure???? I want to buy that drill press right now if i can get it for that price. Ive been on the sears website and cant find a price for it for less than $500. Do you know something that i dont?? Please Explain......
