This is a thread for all Canadians who shop at canadian
Tire and want to know what tools are good.

My list
- pick set(pass)
- screwdrivers(fail) wear out with little use
- Channelock(pass)
-wrenches(pass)
-c clamps(pass)
- Caliper(pass)
- ct Vise grips-(fail IMO)
-shop towel(pass)
-robo grip(pass)
-heat gun(pass)

These are some tools from Canadian tire i own and have used. I have hardly ever had problems with tools from ct.

Screw drivers are a fail for the cheap ones i got some maximum diamond tip ones that been good so far. And I agree the master craft vise grips **** and ive noticed any Irwin vise grips ive bought recently are equally as crappy.

- Sockets are fine (pass)
- Ratchets are not my favorite, but have never failed (pass). My go to ratchets are Princess Auto composites, though
- Wrenches (pass), I have several including stubbies and flex head Gearwrench
- Screwdrivers, while a pass, are my least favorite Canadian Tire selection. I could easily be swayed, although I like the insulated set I have.
- pliers were all replaced with Channellock and yes many came from Canadian Tire while on sale
- breaker bar (pass). How could it not pass for less than $10!
- Torque wrench for my wheels twice a year on 2 cars/trucks, 2 trailers, 1 ATV is a pass. We'll see after 10 years (I have had it for 2-3 years).

Never buying a tool at Canadian Tire means my standards are established based on the sale prices, never full retail.

230 pc drill bit set -so much fail that CT should be embarrassed for stocking such ****
The closest to a positive that i can think of is that if you are foolish enough to insist on using these bits is that you will learn how to sharpen drill bits
In the as delivered condition none of the bits would drill through softwood never mind anything steel
Unless you have very severe masochistic tendency's avoid these

You must have either got a reeeeeeally bad set or are reeeeeeally bad at over exaggerating. Although I do keep mine sharp and use lube I use them often in plate up to 1/4", and occasionally thicker stuff as well with pretty much no problem at all. I do have a nice drill set too, and use many nice bits at work but for a guy doing work at home that set on sale kicks a lot of ***, more so if you have a bench grinder and can sharpen bits/use proper drilling practise.

Fail: Stud finders in the mastercraft flavour
Screwdrivers are a bit weak, but cheap and lifetime warranty(read: the perfect set for the wife to use)

Pass: Wrenches, Sockets, Especially the big impact socket kit in the grey blow molded case that goes on sale for 89.99, The IR air tools, Stanley tape measure, Diamond tip screwdrivers with the hammer cap, The biggest tap & die set that they make which also goes on sale for next to nothing, Cheap multimeters that almost never die and are pretty much spot on compared to the Fluke(read: keep in every car I drive), Fiberglass handle ball peins/sledge/claw hammers.

Mastercraft 1/2 inch impact gun
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-air-impact-wrench-1-2-in-0589327p.html#.VGK5e_nF9IE
Good power, over built, good grip, very weighty. What can I say, its good for $50

Mastercraft 3/8 air ratchet
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-air-ratchet-3-8-in-0589329p.html#.VGK5uPnF9IE
loud, fast, ok power, good grip.

Mastercraft Mini Palm nailer
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-palm-nailer-0588987p.html#.VGK6BvnF9IE
LOUD, but better than a hammer ;)

Mastercraft air hammer
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-air-powered-chisel-0589331p.html#.VGK6GvnF9IE
used it to break up some tile, and to remove some rusted bolts. works

Mastercraft cut off air tool
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/m...wered-cut-off-tool-0589333p.html#.VGK6HfnF9IE

Wouldn't use it for precision work but it makes for a nice shop caliper to beat up. Get it on sale or with the CT money.

Fail's :
Grip tite 3/8 Ratchet
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/grip-tite-3-8-in-veloci-drive-ratchet-0582523p.html#.VGNfvvnF9IE
I bought one of these on sale last year for myself to use in my automotive class. The idea of it turning when swinging in both directions is a neat idea, but the three that I used and returned all stripped themselves within a 1/2 hour of use.

Any of the Cheap Coil Element Fan heaters. They all burn out within a few months, and are generally not really efficient.

Pass :

Extendable 3/8 ratchet
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/m...ble-ratchet-3-8-in-0589151p.html#.VGNfn_nF9IE
Hey, its a 3/8 ratchet that works, and the handle extends. Great on sale

Mastercraft Torque sticks
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/maximum-10-piece-impact-torque-sticks-0581267p.html#.VGNhV_nF9IE
We use these at school for tire changes to prevent the idiots from snapping off lugs. Not 100% accurate, they usually stop at about 5ft/lbs under their rating.

30pc Stanley Fatmax Impact Set
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/s...t-socket-set-30-pc-0589269p.html#.VGNhWvnF9IE
Bought this on sale for $45, great buy. Really over built

Mastercraft Ceramic Barrel heater
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-ceramic-barrel-heater-0436145p.html#.VGNhzPnF9IE
I use this to heat up my basement room, and warm up the garage. Works well, and is well built ( all metal ).

I agree with the negative comments above about drill bits.

FAIL
This set I bought was trash. They broke on first use and were dull etc. There is a reason they were discontinued.

PASS

Drill Doctor (Canadian Tire Special model)
It works extremely well. I bought one and sat down on a Saturday and resharpened my box of dull or broken drills. They are as good if not better than from the factory. I split pointed them all.

Honestly, you'll never buy drills again! You can sharpen them many many times, even ones that have been broken.

It goes on sale regularly and it is on sale right now for $69.99

(Pass) Skil drill press
(Fail) Pistol style wire strippers http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/m...r-and-cutter-combo-0529923p.html#.VGPUm_nF-So
(Fail) Self adjusting wire strippers http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/m...r-and-cutter-combo-0529923p.html#.VGPUm_nF-So
(fail) 4 1/2 mastercraft angle grinders after returning the third one i gave up.
(pass) All their wrenchs....yes i think i now have all the ones they sell.
(fail) screw drivers
(pass) Electric impact gun and impact sockets
(pass) thickness planner
(pass/Fail) mobile bases for tools. They are hit a miss and tend to need modification to work right. But they are cheap and work well when you modify them.

I'll second the electric impact gun. Makes winter tire installation a doddle. Of course, it only gets used twice a year, so YMMV, but when it goes on sale for $49, it's worth it, I think.

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-7-5a-impact-wrench-0543182p.html

I've seen this gun with many other brands on it, including Princess Auto and Kawasaki, so I'm sure it's a C.H. Ina company product.

As well as a HF version;

http://www.harborfreight.com/12-in-electric-impact-wrench-68099.html

So pick it up from who ever sells it cheapest I guess.

Pass: Mastercraft Professional Series combination wrenches. Good length and nice thin rings on the box end. Have held up well for close to 20 years.

Pass: Mastercraft Turbogrip bar clamps. Seem to hold really well, but are kind of "clunky".

Pass: 3/8" metric swivel impact sockets.

Fail: Every screwdriver labelled Mastercraft, and most things labelled Jobmate, especially drill bits.

Fail: Paying full price for any Mastercraft tool.

Pass: mastercraft wobble extension (rip off of snaps on wobble plus or what they call it)

Pass/Fail: mastercraft maximum screwdrivers, I have never had one fail and use them alot but they do "wear" decently quick and then can lead to stripped heads.

To comment on that drill bit set, mine is perfectly fine so far, however a coworker bought the same set and his is JUNK alot fo the bits are not even cut correctly on the ends. Then again what do you expect when you buy that manby drill bits for $30 (fathers day sale)

Fail - I got one of the junk 230 drill bit kits. Majority of them weren't sharpened properly. This was from several years ago and IIRC was on sale for $30.00.
Pass - pro series sockets and wrenches

Pass: Mastercraft maximum wrenches. Not as nice as my plvmbs or macs, but I have never had an issue with any of them
Pass: all Mastercraft pliers except the waterpump/channelock style ones.
Pass: wood handled ball pien hammers, once you sand the varnish off and oil the handle.
Pass: Mastercraft digital calipers. Compared them against a couple starrett micrometers, and they read dead on. No, not a replacement for micrometers, but as good as any calipers I have seen, short of starrett master precision verniers. And at nearly 600 bucks cheaper, that's kinda expected.
Fail: anything jobmate
Fail: anything Mastercraft that relies on steel to cut (ie drill bits, taps, hacksaw blades, ect) carbide stuff such as tablesaw blades is pretty decent though.
Fail: from my experience anything Mastercraft with a motor. Some of them are ok, but they never last. And I would never buy something with a battery from them after my cordless drill and my uncle's identical one both failed in less than a year.

you can never have too many tools

in the 8 years thousands of lug nuts removed. i have only broke the 17mm 2 times
for the price they are amazing.

Ill try and get some pics there now chrome from so much use

What does everyone think of the Mastercraft Maximum 1/2" drive torque wrench. They are on sale this week for around 60%. Is it good enough for tires and suspension or worth getting something better.
