Do can-less light fixtures need to be replaced as an assembly, meaning can you change just the light or just the junction box/ driver?
I assume the driver (in the junction box) may not be universally interchangeable.

I have some that have went bad and the particular one is no longer available. I have been changing them in their entirety but the last one was a real PIA to fit in the exisitng hole

They're pretty specific, so you'd need a bit of luck. There should be some electrical info on the label of the driver. They key information is voltage and current output. If you can find a replacement driver that is close to those numbers it might work.
Also, check the dimensions to make sure it fits thru the hole.

I think you can consider the junction box and light itself to be designed and approved as a single assembly. You don't have the specs and data to allow you to mix and match them.
