Can't get it up (Genie opener)

For some reason, our Genie 1200 opener has decided not to work. I checked everything- safety stuff, operating force, etc. I re-programmed it several times. It closes fine, but won't open. The door is very light, and opens very easily. It doesn't even try to open- no click, no movement; nothing. It does move up and down normally when programming it, so I know the motor is OK. What goes wrong with these things- bad board? Worth fixing, or just buy another one?

I've installed dozens of door openers over the years, I refuse to install genie openers any more. I've had numerous call backs, their tech line is not good, takes way to long to talk to anybody,. The last time I called their help line I was on hold for 52 minutes then got disconnected and had to call back. Never again will I use Genie.
Have only used Liftmaster since then. Now that I think about it I have never had a call back for Liftmaster so I can't vouch for their customer service.

It doesn't work with any input. I've tried all three. The only way it works is with the programming buttons on the unit itself. I'm not sure how to check the sensor on the track, but I'll take a close look at it. One other thing I noticed is that the light stays on all of the time.

As for brand, well, it was cheap. The door is a very light single door. It is well lubed and adjusted. I don't think anything wore out. I suspect an electrical/electronic problem.

Did you try unplugging and plug back in ?
I'm sure you probably checked with genie for there input.
Maybe to avoid frustration, buy another one and just replace main unit.

Any nearby lightning strikes? I had one (lightning strike) last year near my pole barn. Now the light will not come on, the wireless remote won't work. I now have to hit the button once, then twice and hold it down until the door is completely down. Figured the control board took a hit. Just got a replacement head on the cheap and will replace soon.

I would pull the release cable and open the door manually, just to make sure that the spring(s) are OK.

I have similar type problem except it wants to go down only everytime i hit the wall button? No up motion at all?

Yes, the door moves very easily. AFAIK, the wall switch is directly wired, so the antenna wouldn't come into play. Whatever it is, I get nothing, not even a 'click' sound like I do when it closes.

BTW- A similar opener is about $200; a new board is $90 free shipping. I'd just like to KNOW it's the board before I spend the money. We haven't had a thunderstorm here recently.

I would suspect it IS the board. How OLD is the opener? Whats the return policy on the board if it doesn't fix it? Look for the board on Amazon and then you could return it if it doesn't fix it.

Opener is 7-8 years old; used twice a day or more. I got my money's worth out of it, but replacing a board is easier than replacing the whole thing.

is the unit actually stopping from the micro switch / location switch when it goes down? Does it know it is fully closed? When you say "light " stays on are you referring to the overhead light or the door sensors?

I have had good service from my Geni Garage Door Openers. I have 4.

Their Tech Support line 1-800-843-4084 has bailed me out a lot of times.

OK- After being unplugged for 24 hours, now it works. I had trouble getting the programming to work, but after three tries, now the stoopid thing works fine. The light that stayed on is the overhead light. I'll see if it goes out after the time delay. I don't think it uses microswitches. You move it up and down with buttons on the head unit, then hit the program button when it's where you want to set the limits.

I know. I tried that several times yesterday, to know avail. Whatever, unplugging over night did the trick.

One of my openers would go down but not up, ended up being the AC plug was loose in the outlet. Had to bend the prongs out a little and has worked for years now.

If everything the same, just change out power head and leave the rest.

Did you just install an LED light bulb close? Something about causing interference with openers.

good catch. We had to find a special one that is approved for garage door openers. For example, if we come home and the neighbor has his leaf blower operating within 200' the garage door won't operate. The second he turns it off we can get back in the garage.

As I said, it's working fine now. I put generic LED bulbs in it one Day One, and never had a problem. I was also told that the vibration would kill the LED bulb, but it's had the same one in there all these years.

Gonna mention this odd factoid...

Button remotes don't always function if you mount them on metal...

I keep a spare remote in the garage and molding taped it to metal shelving... the remote would not work... pulled it off the metal... bingo it worked.

Same thing when I got another spare remote and placed it in a toolbox drawer... I had to pickup the remote before it would work.

I ended up building a tiny wooden tray with a foam liner for the remote to sit in... bingo it works.

Not sure it’s in play with the OP issues........but......Agree ^^^^^^^^^^

Double stick tape a remote to metal switch plate ........it will NOT work. Use plastic plate works fine. In my case the metal plate was a dummy cover, no wiring or signal interference from power lines.
