Can't get the Erwin 5" vise to thread back in.

I have a Newer Erwin 5" vise that my grandson totally unscrewed from the main vise body. When I try to re-install it I can get about 4 revolutions of the screw before it locks up and can't crank it back in any further. What do I need to do to fix the vise?

Can you pull the movable jaw completely off and look down the threads where the vice shaft would go? There has to be something there that's preventing the screw from threading back into the vice.

Did something happen to the threads when the vise was apart? Did the main screw get hammered on or bent? That would cause your symptoms. Maybe the nut is damaged or clogged with something? Is the slide still clean and straight?

Try lifting up on the end hanging out in case it is so heavy it's not going in straight.

Since you have the slide out start by inspecting the end of the lead screw. The very end may have been damaged if it was allowed to drop. If it looks ok then remove the screw from the sliding jaw and see if it will screw in without the slide. Then install the slide without the screw to make sure it slides freely into the body. If you get any fails in any test stop and figure out the problem. You may have a bit of debris in the nut, but I would not expect damage in the nut if you can get the screw in 4 turns.

Is the thread a 2 start ?? , if you can undo the movable jaw until it stops moving turn the handle another 180 degrees then try turning to close the Visę yo may have to go just past the 180 you should feel the thread in gage in the nut.

Like goldtang wrote, a double start thread should go in either way but sometimes the way it was cut could prevent that.
Also, some vises have a nut section that's semi floating and not locked precisely in place. There's a small possibility that it's cocked slightly.
