Can't get to a bolt, need a tool.

I'm putting in the upper dash bolts in my car.

Funny thing, at the JY, they came right out, and on my old dash, they did as well.

However, I cannot get them tight. The windshield is in the way.

I tried making a super long extension out of 1/4 drive 9 inch extensions, but the curvature of the windshield prohibits that. '

I looked at flexible extensions, but everyone says they are for low torque applications.

What else I can use? I can't use a wrench, it's recessed.

Im not sure what you are working on but in my experience those bolts are not much larger than 7mm-8mm. I dont see any reason why a flexible extension wont work. It will at least get them snug and considering the size of those fasteners and the fact the dont hold really hold anything (just keep it from rattling) that should eb more than enough

Home Depot carries the Milwaukee right angle drive attachment that will take 1/4 hex bits. I have worn out two or three already using them every day on cordless drills. They really take the abuse before they are gone. They run about $26 and are worth it the first time you use one. I use it with sockets, insert bits and it really helps. I used it mostly for removing the 4" long bolts that hold microwaves to cabinets over a stove. I could reach bolts standing on the ground and hold the microwave up and the same time instead of having to use ladder to reach bolts with normal straight bit in drill.

I would most certainly say that this is a low torque situation. Universal sockets also.

try three or four wobles short ones make a nice curve that you can still torque alittle

I would find a 1/4" drive socket that fit the bolt, then get the 1/4" square to 1/4" hex screwdriver adapter but use a 1/4" end wrench to turn it.

Will a U-Joint or Universal Socket not give you the angle you need?

Why not Just get some key stock cut to length stick it in the back of the socket and put a wrench on it? 1/4 inch socket 1/4" key stock. Simplicity is the key. Craftsman also sells a socket to wrench adapter kit. Or if its a screw just get a 1/4 bit and use a 1/4 wrench. Maybe I don't understand the problem.

X2, I used to do this with my ratcheting wrench all the time until I purchased the gear wrench tool that was specifically designed for this application.

I have one of those.......have used it for under the dash stuff MANY times. Heater core removal, audio etc. I read a post on here........it was from a Mercedes tech and he said they design the car to be ASSEMBLED a certain way.......cars are not designed with DISASSEMBLY/REPAIR in mind.

Along the lines of this method, use shorter extensions but using 1/4" drive with u-joints between them to gain the curve you need. In other words use extension/u-joint/extension/u-joint/extension or similar configuration to give you the length and curve you need.

I am a former car electronics installer and always had no less than 2 of these in my box at all times. It is defenitaly better than the millwuakee version at HD

Seems strange you could access them fine in 2 cars to get them apart, but can't now to get it together. I hope the screws are at the right angle, and not cross threaded.
