The spindle on my 15 inch Craftsman drill press (137.229150) will not move down anymore. The quill set screw turns about 1/8 of a turn in either direction before it locks up. I have disassembled everything I can (removed pulley, crank handle assembly, spring return, etc.) and am at the point where if I could remove the quill setscrew the quill should drop out, or be otherwise easily removable. The spindle rotates as it should. How do I get the set screw out? Brute force, easy out ? Any comments? Thanks

Its probable there's a burr or smashed up threads which is holding your setscrew back.
If you haven't soaked it in oil, I'd try that first, work the screw back and forth and see if that helps.
You can try brute force, which is worthwhile, but likely you'll round out the internal hex.
Then you'll have to drill out the setscrew. If you can get an idea of the thread size, guessing an SAE thread if its an older C'man. Then you can find the correct tap-drill size. The good news is you are disassembling it so everything can be cleaned up and put back to good order.
