Old Briggs and Stratton engine on this mower. "Runs great" !!!

Oldie but, goodie wards garden mark chain driven self propelled mower.Powered by a 3.5 Briggs and Stratton engine ad it runs great. There is no chain and it needs a new air filter and throttle cable. and great for someone that wants to do a little tinkering..

How long has it been since Monkey Wards closed ?

They shutdown Montgomery Ward in 2001. My uncle has one of those mowers and it went through hell and back when my cousins and I were teens. He still has it and uses it to cut his lawn.

Prolly worth grabbing.

I have an '85 B&S mower that I found abandoned next to a dumpster. Put a new pullcord on it and cleaned up/adjusted the flywheel and magneto gap. Started up and still runs since I found it maybe 12 years ago.

I'm not sure if you're offering the mower for sale, or if it's something you are considering buying. :headscrat

As noted above, there will be a series of numbers stamped on the front of the blower housing (aka "shroud") just above the spark plug. It will be a series of three: two all-numeric or alpha-numeric codes, and then a long string of numbers. These are the model, type, and code. As noted, the first two digits in the third set of characters will tell you the year.
If it was built prior to 1985, it's got a point-triggered ignition system, and a bitchy carburetor, and I wouldn't waste time screwing around with it.
If it was built after 1985, I might give the guy $10 bucks for it if I didn't have any other mowers to build, but having 40 of them here right now, I'd have to pass on it.
That little "Quattro" engine is a fairly reliable power plant if it's not run out of oil or over-revved. Otherwise bad things can happen.

hey why wont my lawnmower run.jpg

I have one similar but branded "Meijer". same engine, body is light blue. it's almost as ugly but always starts right up.

you can't kill those old B&S 3.5 motors. this one was given for free, wouldn't stay running because the governor rusted away. I put a spring and a piece of sheet metal bracket on the shroud to hold the throttle in too fast of a position but been using it for the last 4 years as a brush mower. thing just revs and keeps on running. oil hasn't been changed in probably 25 years if ever...

key to those old carbs is keep the tank full of gas, if the level goes below the little primer bowl within the tank, it takes forever to draw fuel and start. fill it right up and it'll start first pull.

Not buying it, just have a lot of respect for the old motors continuing to start and run.

I do have a soft spot for the B&S motors. Learned to take them apart with an old hex ell socket set and a screwdriver.

Both! I used to show at Kent. If you remember the big Coldwell "h" that was me. I also have shown at Zagray. I tend to swop stuff around year to year. I have the "h" a version of the first production walk behind, a Coldwell electric from 1923, Ideal's, Jacobsens, two and four stroke 30's Lawn Boys, more Coldwell "L"s than I can count, an early Pioneer rotary (late twenties). Everything is packed away for the winter but if you're ever in Connecticut I'd be happy to show them, the tools, engines, tractors and vintage appliances. I also help put on the Tobacco Valley Flywheelers show at Haddam Meadows.
