Hazet 190L? Stahlwille? Facom? What cantilever toolbox should I get? All of them?

Please post pics and help me decide. I've seen pics of some other ones with stamped or cast bottoms that won't rust, too. I think they were made in South Aftrica and Japan. Somebody...?

I had an older garbage picked craftsman one I sold on eBay for 50 bucks. Ran across the same one last week for 10 but I passed on it.

Aren't the Beta boxes Asian imports (maybe I'm thinking Facom)? If so, you'd do better to save your money and buy an Excel five-tray cantilever for less than $40 off Amazon.

If I had the money, I'd probably go with a Kennedy USA (not the Homak one). On a budget, the Excel boxes are surprisingly nice.

I've got an older Kennedy too. Yes a bit heavy, but it looks to be a few decades old and is in great shape.

It has "Kennedy" written in white script, looks hand lettered to me, but who knows.

I use it as a junk box, random homeowner type tools and **** I'm willing to let my sister's husband borrow. Aren't I nice?

The Kennedy was actually the nicest of four old boxes I rescued before a coworker could doom them to the scrap heap...

And of course, one got the treatment...

@Monte : i think the Stalwille cantilever is an old one. The new ones don't have any more the "Stahlwille" stamped on the cover, but just a sticker. Could be just a detail for you, but i'm a real sucker for steel stamped parts...

@aspera : Try the Thread "Tools from old world", post#6754. You'll find an answer to your question:)

:( That´s not good :( The name should be stamped into the metal...
My favorite would be Gedore anyway, the old ones like above but with a wooden handle. They also are not rectangular but have a anti tip over trapezoid bottom design.

Bravo Monte, nice find  Nice Ktc cantilever, those Japanese are definetely tough guys:rocker: I like the Green box, but i don't get what are the rectangular parts welded inside, do they have anything to do with the "patend pending" stamped on the cover ?

Maybe for inserting metal divider plates.

Some Krost history: Krost

They are a well known and loved old SA company, the new Krost use different logo and no longer makes those :( That logo was very distinctive on the products.

Krost Office products is a South African company that designs, manufactures and distributes office accessories.

Our company was founded in 1989. This is a second generation ‘Krost’ company. The original company ‘ Krost Brothers’ was founded in 1914, and was dedicated to manufacturer of Office Furniture in South Africa.

You may have referred to this one made in South Africa maybe: Gedore SA cast alloy no less :) here on top of a Gedore trolley for these boxes. Click to my Flicker photo set....

Rgrds

That's the one.

From looking closely at the pictures there are subtle differences in how these tool boxes are made. Some have one handle, some two. Kennedy has an outer "shell". Material differences make a big difference, too. Cast aluminum alloy and stainless steel are very cool.

It looks like the weak link is the bottom of regular steel boxes. The old boxes tend to rust. That's a good excuse to buy a trolley, I think. :)

if you have problems with rust: Gedore: zinc plated + powder coated.

Here's a bad picture of a Talco cantilever box. Website says they're British made. The paint was practically gone when I got it so I painted it Rustoleum Spa Blue. It was fairly close in color. I'll take a better picture when I'm back home in a couple weeks.

I have a 1920s cantilever snap on tool box with the small paper sticker logo like the center one in the large picture in this thread. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement/duplicate sticker made and does anyone know what the color is?

Here's one I scored at an auction for $4 with all the tools a few weeks back. I put it in molassas to get rid of the heavy surface rust. You can see in the last couple pics the muck line where it was too tall for my tote that I have the molassas stored in. One plus is it took 80% of the original paint off as well. I'll only need to do a quick sweep with my media blaster, prime and paint.

I have two Kennedy cantilevers, and one from Simonsen Metal Products. All are very high quality.
