I’m building a 1967 mustang, and I would like to make some custom quarter panel vents that are similar to the GT hood turn signal inserts. The challenge I am dealing with is figuring out the best way to recreate the inset flange in my quarter panel like what is shown in the hood. A pot metal vent rests on the flange and is flush on the surface.

The quarter is already on the car, so I can’t use my clunky bead roller. I also don’t want to distort the panel beating on it. The best solution I have is to fabricate the piece and weld it in, but I would appreciate suggestions.

IIRC the issue is the qtr is a duplicate of a 68 and fits the 67 but has no provision for the "vents" like the 67- If you want it close to original appearance I think you may have to cut the holes and then use a flanging tool (like a weird vice grip to bend down the area around the hole to give you a recess so the vent lays flat) I suspect it would have been much easier with the qtr off (but I think you can access thru interior - but prob have to pull anything like a window or window track out) On second thought- yours is a FB so you wouldnt have roll down glass back there- only the coupes and verts- On my 69 vert theres a pretty good access hole but its cramped and the edges are kinda sharp so be cautious

if you are modding it- you could just cut a hole and then fab a cover similar to shelbys like for rear brake cooling or just looks

Even though the ‘67 vents, the ‘67-‘68 quarter louvers, and all the Shelby stuff basically just cover a hole and stand proud of the sheet metal, I wanted to go for something that would mount flush. I just think that would have more of a refined factory-esque look to it.

Here is my hood with the insert. Below is the quarter. I really only thing I have to flange is in the front edge of the quarter. The new insert design will just be an extension of the profile of quarter scoop.

Keep in mind your going to need some sort of water catchment and drain system. But you’re saying ‘67 but showing pics of a ‘68? ‘67 had two nice looking vents already there.
Maybe just go all out with Shelby vents? I did it with my ’66 GT Fastback. But I retained all the GT badging and GT side stripes.
