So i was at the Goodwill Outlet and found an old BMW engine fan. Is it possible to wire it up to put it in my garage and use as a window fan?

put it on a dimmer switch to control the speed?

You would need to rig up a 12VDC power supply to run it from.

Presuming you mean a "normal" household dimmer switch, such as would be used for a light fixture, no.

As 2ManyProjects said, you need a 12V DC power supply. This will convert the household 120V AC electricity to the same voltage you have in a car. Make sure the power supply can handle the current (amps) that the fan will need. If the fan does not have the current listed on a sticker, then you need a current meter to measure it. Then buy a power supply that is large enough to run it. A power supply that is too small will burn up.
In the long run, it might be cheaper to buy a normal window fan than to buy a heavy-duty power supply.

no sticker on it, so i guess i will toss it.

No sticker is not a problem, most of these fans draw between 20 and 25 amps at 12 volts. That's a hefty draw, but possible. The problem is that there are many better solutions that will work. Also, these types of fans are designed to move a lot of air, and are loud.

I'd get a window fan or a box fan and use that. Then resell that BMW fan on CL or where ever you can.
