Hey guys, I wasn't real sure how to describe the "title"...but was wondering what kind of tools you keep in your car and how and where you store them. Right now, I'm haulin around a 118 pc Gearwrench set with a few little extra odds and ends. I'd probably get a lot better gas mileage if I would get rid of some of the damn tools out of the trunk. Anyone have any ideas on some nice smaller boxes for a car or have any pictures?

I have a small craftsman set that comes in a zippered leather case. 1/4 & 3/8 drive shallow SAE and Metric. I think its 46 pieces. Include a multi bit screwdriver and a couple of wrenches. It weighs about 5 or 6 pounds and is about 6"x9"x2". I picked it up around the holidays quite a few years ago.I don't know if they still sell it. I also have a small black plastic snap case about (2"x4"x12") that I have a set of 6 screwdrivers (3phillips, 3 straight), pliers, adjustable wrench, diagonal cutters, multicrimp tool, small digital multimeter, and a leatherman wave multitool. It all fits under the rear seat in my Dakota crewcab. I figure if I need more then that I'm not fixing it on the side of the road.

Now that's the kind of answer I was looking for! I get started by sayin to myself..."well if I have this, might as well need that" Before you know it, I've did so much "this and that" that I have more tools in the car than the Snap-On truck.

I actually don't have anything.

I'd really need to get setup with a good toolset for the vehicles. When I go offroading , I just pull out of my main toolbox and dump it in a toolbag. Depending on the trip it might be just some wrenches and sockets or everything from some air tools, grinder, welder, etc.

I carry a 120pc or so craftsman set, pliers, screwdrivers, hammer, prybar. Can't really say I've needed it in the last 10 years or so, since I drive toyotas. Just makes me feel better to have something.

Don't carry any tools in the personal vehicles. Can't remember last time I was broke down except for 2 fuel pumps and I sure wasn't going to drop the fuel tank on the side of the road.

But now that you mention it, some pliers, screwdrivers and flashlite would be a good idea. I knew those flea market tools would come in handy. You could porbably use an old leather purse as a tool pouch to keep them from clanging around, I'm sure Elroy would approve.

It sounds like -B- has enough tools to build a road thru the woods, cut the trees out of the way and bury a body.....

I just keep a very cheap, wally world tool set in the trunk, a spare serpentine belt, a quart of oil, several hose clamps, a roll of duct tape and a gallon of 50/50 antifreeze mix. Anything more than that can handle and I will get a tow truck.

Common sense gear in the front includes at least one pistol, spare mag, two knives, pepper spray, ASP baton, surefire light and a charged cell phone. Of course those are with me all of the time... They don't stay in the car.

I've never needed the tools I carry in my car - only to help others! I have 10 pc metric shallow and deep, breaker bar, hammer, some pliers and screwdrivers and 10 pc wrench set. Also battery jump starter, first aid kit, flashlight, blanket, lock deicer, windshield deicer, gloves, leatherman, knife. Holy **** maybe I need to ditch some of this stuff!

Well I do live in the north shore of Boston ya know.....

I have had to clear my own path a few times at MTB races to set up neutral/ tec inspection pits. It is far easier to have the tool packed in the truck than to have to pack them every time. just about everything fits in the bins behind my seats in my Ram.

In my G35, the only thing I carry is a breaker bar with socket (the stock lug wrench will not fit the Volk wheels). It's a jap car....no need for tools. For my 4 Runner, same thing; except this breaker bar and socket is for the lugs on my boat trailer. Now for my Jeep ZJ, it's a whole nother story. On that, I carry pretty much everything necessary to dissasemble the whole damn vehicle. I use a large fitted tool bag. I use that off-road, and broken parts are a way of life. Franky, broken parts are a way off life on the street as well.....it's a Jeep thing. I also carry Jack stands, farm jack, all fluids, come along, pruning saw.

My road box is an older craftsman 2 drawer take along. It is full...FULL of cheap ROC and India made **** I have picked up over the years. The top tray is full of electrical fittings and tapes of various makes. Actually, its not my road box, all my cars have roadside assistance. It is my pull-a-part box. I also take the contents of it with me, in a back pack type "box" when I go fishing in the gulf. I will admit that some of the tools....some of them...., aren't half bad.

The big Gearwrench pass-through kit. It's compact since there are no deep sockets needed. And I scored a set for under $25 on eBay. And a tire repair kit.

I carry a socket set that covers everything from small to about an 1" in SAE and Metric.

Wrenches from 7-16mm and 1/4-3/4" and a pipe wrench and crescent

Big hammer, pliers, screw drivers, vice grips and hex keys.

A bunch of other tools I can't think of at the moment

a shovel, a pick, chain, squeegee, 4x4 block and a flashlight

Paper towels, rags, bungee cords, zip ties, baling wire, transmission fluid, oil, coolant, water, spare points, and matches.

Weirdly enough I use it mostly for fixing other peoples broke down jap **** and other than 1 flat can only think of 1 time I used the tools in the car on the car.

allabouttools,

Yeh, you're hauling a lot more tools than you need. I drive an older work truck that requires occasional maintenance. And it may break down some day, who knows. So I carry a minimal set of tools in the truck at all times. The trick is knowing your vehicle and its fasteners. Here's what I carry in my truck:

10 piece combo wrench set, 9mm-19mm

1 6-in1 screwdriver

1 1/2" drive ratchet

1 3/8" drive ratchet

1 1/4" spinner handle

2 extensions (1/2" x 6", 3/8" x 3")

1 3/8" to 1/4" drive adapter

4 shallow 1/2" drive metric sockets

8 shallow 3/8" drive metric sockets

4 deep 3/8 drive metric sockets

4 shallow 1/4" drive metric sockets

1 deep 1/4" drive metric socket

1 8" side cutter/****

1 8" needle nose plier

1 9-1/2" channellock plier

1 pocket knife

1 electrical continuity tester

These 33 tools are kept in a Bucket Boss Tool Roll (measures about 4" x 15" and weighs about 7lbs when all rolled up with above tools in it). This is stored behind the drivers seat.

I also have a flashlight and fire extinguisher mounted between the two front seats. The factory tire tools (a 1" drive 41mm socket, a 1" drive x 12" extension, and a 1" drive x 36" breaker bar) are mounted behind the drivers seat. Last, I carry a good 150psi tire guage and some spare fuses in the glovebox.

These tools, about 40 in all, will take care of about 95% of anything that can go wrong or come loose on this truck. They will also take care of about 75% of what can go wrong on anybody elses car or truck.

Hope this helps you. And don't forget the fire extinguisher and flashlight; both can be lifesavers. Your minimal tool set may be different than mine, but I'm guessing that yours would include no more than about 40 tools.
