Car Lift Measurements

In planning the finishes for my garage (cabinets, etc), I am also planning for installing a lift at some future point.

Therefore, what are the outside measurements of your lift and what kind (including four-post, two-post, etc). I need to know the rectangle of space that a lift could potentially take up.

Also, what are the power requirements and how is the power routed to the lift? Controls on the wall? I'm thinking about the need to prewire prior to rocking/insulating the walls.

Thanks!!:)

I'm in the market for a lift too. I kinda like the Bendpaks for their reputation and reasonable price. I'm looking for a 4 post so that I can store a car on top of another. If you check their site, they've got all the models there and you can check out the specs. The ones I'm looking at for a car rate to 9,000lbs. I think the narrowest is 103 in wide. It is 174 in long. I think they can be bought with either 110 or 220 power. What do you plan to do with the lift? How high is your ceiling?

20x20 is the area that you will need, trust me on this. really to be comfortable, in the middle of a 24 x30 shop would do nicely

I am looking to store one car on top, and another underneath, but I am also looking to be able to work on a vehicle, so I would prefer a lift with pads/arms for removing wheels and such when lifted.

Regarding size of space, my vehicles are smaller and I don't really need to use the lift to work on them as much as for storage and freeing up some space in the garage. I also have a shop that can fit one vehicle, but not a lot of room to work on one.

Sweet, found it, thanks. That Maxjax two post would also be great as it would allow the garage space to remain open and only use lift when needed...

When buying a lift, consider all of your fleet, plus the size of all of the vehicles that are driven by your family and friends. Believe me when I say that your lift will turn into an oil change and brake job magnet, for even folks that have no intention to ever work on their own cars. As soon as they find out that all they have to do is bring you beer and food and you'll work on their cars for free (and not the dealer's $100+/hr fee), they'll be constantly talking to you about how their car is running or what sounds it's making (aka brake jobs). This is not a bad thing, just prepare yourself.

Also, even if your main purpose is to use the lift for storage, do consider a rolling air jack. I've got the BendPak RJ-45 as well as a jacking tray. I use the RJ-45 to raise the front high enough to then slide the jack tray over and then place jack stands on it. Then I slide the RJ-45 to the back and use it to raise the rear of the vehicle. Anyway, without these items, you will never be able to do any type of suspension work or brake jobs. Think ahead and give these some thought. The rolling jack is a heavy item that will need to be shipped in the same manner as your lift, so consider having it shipped at the same time. A jacking tray can be shipped via UPS so it's no big deal to get one later on.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks for the replies. HIRISC/ovilla, how wide is that lift from outside to outside?
I am starting to get the feeling that I will not be able to install a lift in my garage, unless it's an in-ground or single post life (both of which are out of my price range by a good margin), due to the width of my shop (ie, not wide enough :(). Perhaps when I receive that currently unknown inheritance or lottery, I'll be able to install on of those!!

65Stang, The HD-9ST is narrower than the HD-9 by over 10".

I just called Bend-Pak because I am also looking around...sadly, their products are all made in chinna now. Looks like I will be in the market for a USED Bend-Pak so as not to reward their decision to go 'off shore' (I love that euphemism), but I digress.

That is definitely a better width at 103" compared to the typical 135". I would prefer a two post over a four post, but a four post may be the only cost effective lift that will work. Thanks for the info!!

How about full height scissor lifts? They don't allow for parking two vehicles in one stall, but are definitely a space saver!

HD-9 is about 120" outside to outside.

You want to add another 3" or so for the base plates. I'm out of town or I'd be happy to provide an 'actual' measurement.

Full lift scissor lifts are a good alternative if you need to park 'on' it. Can walk under, full open access just like a 4 posts and the wheels are free like 2 post.

The only real downside is that they aren't mobile, but that's a nit.
