I've just disassembled a Solex carb and instead of taking it to a shop for cleaning, is there something I can soak it in at home in order to get the crud out of it? Will normal solvent do is or is there a magic sauce available?

I use whatever is on sale to get rid of the grease. I also soak the carb in vinegar if it has the greenish residue from corn gas. You will have to scrub the green stuff to get rid it.

Any carb cleaner will do. The trick is to soak all the parts and gently clean the orifices and don't bend anything. I've had good luck cleaning the outside by soda blasting.

soak it in Gunk brand parts cleaner or mineral spirits, if really griming try overn cleaner ... but that will attack the finish.

I haven't tried it yet but I heard boiling 1 cup tide (powdered) 1 gallon water for an hour works. I use Berrymans at work but it seems that the can rusts thru pretty quickly, so I don't want that at the house. In the past I use autozones house brand spray carb cleaner and an air compressor to blow it out good.

Years ago I used to have this stuff called Hydroseal. It came in a big metal can with a basket in it. You put your stuff in the basket, into the can and let it soak. It was water soluble and you just rinsed stuff off the next day...worked great and you could use it over and over till it got too funky.

I wash it off first with brake cleaner. Take apart and use carb cleaner inside. Then I do a light sand blast with, drum roll,,,baking soda,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yes baking soda. You can sand blast all the parts without worry and it really cleans it up. Then just spray wash clean again with brake cleaner. Simple to set up to sand blast with baking soda and washes all away, No residue at all. Can do it to most every part.

I've been rebuilding carbs for around 30 years and about 10 years ago I noticed that the good carb cleaner (Berryman,Hyroseal,Zep, and Napa brand) doesn't seem to work has good has it used to. Years ago we only soaked carbs for 15 minutes and they came out very clean. Now you can leave them in over night they only come out fairly clean. My latest favorite carb soak cleaner is straight Acetone. Use it just like the regular carb cleaner and it doen't attack the aluminum or zinc die cast.
