carbide tipped lathe cutting bit replacements?

So... I got this 7 piece carbide tipped lathe turning tool off Amazon. Decent. one thing it didn't have is the replacement carbide tip numbers / models.

How are these carbide tips rated ? if I ever need to get replacements?

the tool says "5/16 8mm shank 14 inserts".... ?

Tool shape, size, cutting profile, cutting radious, center hole size (or lack there of), hardness, material type...

These things can be as bad as Harley Davidson models.

They look like 1/4" IC size to me, probably CCMT 21.51 for the 80° diamond & DCMT 21.51 for the 55° diamond. Those are the most common size for corner radius. Those are ANSI sizes, for ISO the equivalent are CCMT 060204 & DCMT 070204. The 14 probably means 1/4" inscribed circle. For that shank size 3/8" IC size inserts are too big. The p/n for CCMT holder shown has 06 at the end which is the IC size in ISO (metric).

The parting tool insert is probably MGMN200. But you should verify if yours are 2mm wide, that's what the 200 means as well as the 2 at the end of the tool holder p/n.

There are other variations of inserts that will fit your holders (same shape & size) but the ones I listed are the most common.

EDIT: BTW, not actually shown in your pics but looks like one of the boring bars in your set uses triangle shape inserts, those will be TCMT 21.51 or TCMT 110204.

For a hobbyist, the generic China carbide inserts will be fine for performance vs price. After all that set is generic China as well are the inserts. And judging by the size of them sounds like the OP has a small hobby size lathe (nothing wrong with that). The cheap China inserts are actually not that bad for what they cost, for carbide that is. It's anything is HSS (or so they claim) is where you can get absolute junk.

I'm just a hobbyist & I tend to not buy China indexable holders but I have/use a mix of quality name brand & inserts from Aliexpress. Sure some of my China inserts don't last as long & might not perform as well but for the price they're acceptable. Some of them are actually pretty decent. I have some inserts from China that are clones of Korloy, well I swear they are knock offs because of the price but I can't tell the difference compared to real Korloy from Korea.

Days of finding quality name brand inserts on ebay for dirt cheap are gone. Luckily I have enough now to last my lifetime but occasionally I do need to buy some. A hobbyist is not gonna pay $10 -$25 for a single insert when they can buy a pack of 10 for that much or even less, I sure wouldn't unless I really need to & there have been times I needed to. $2-$3 per insert is usually what I was happy to pay for name brands on ebay. I'm not promoting or recommending to buy the China stuff but for those who aren't professionals, it's very tempting.

This one was on Amazon choice list when I hit the buy button now it is not. Not sure but it looks and feels very decent, have not cut anything yet so… these things have to have a standard to the cutter bits right ?

Speaking of eBay I had some from impulse buy and those are huge comparing to the ones in this tool bit….

Traver tools (industrial supplier) is have a sale at $3 a bit, just can’t tell if it will fit.

For hobby use check Ali for cheap inserts , order some for steel, aluminum, stainless steel to try

I usually buy my DCMT carbide inserts from McMaster Carr or the local machinist tooling supply.

Sometimes, if I can remember in advance and have time to wait weeks for shipping, I will order them from banggood.com.

I can and do mix these DCMT inserts up in a bin and cannot tell which is which from a visual inspection or tool performance.
McMaster is $14 per insert, Local supply is $16 per insert and Banggood is $0.60 per insert.

Yes, middle column in post 9. A tooling catalog will tell you what every letter means.

The cheap Chinese multipack of inserts is as brittle as Saltine crackers.

Expensive inserts are worth the premium.

Junk in, junk out.

Learn with the stuff you have, and when you feel comfortable with operating the machine and creating parts, get quality tooling and you will feel the difference.


I recommend the AR Warner HSS stuff for aluminum with tap magic aluminun cutting fluid

Mind your speeds and feeds with steels. Thats finiky on the chinese lathes, but you can turn out good parts with practice.
