Carburetor Cleaning

I can't seem to be able to buy carb cleaning solvent any where here on Long Island in New York! All the parts houses I went to only carry aresol cans. I remember buying solvent in 5 gallon drums which I used to soak the carbs in. What are people using to clean carbs today?
Also I need to clean a 24 gallon steel gas tank for a boat any suggestions about a procedure to remove the rust and junk on the bottom?

I recently bought a 1 gal can with basket to soak a Holley tractor carb in. Got it from NAPA. This is the same old cold soak that I used 30 years ago, works great.

I have used Lacquer Thinner to Mineral Spirits to soak. It is all about the brushes and the pokers to clean it out..

That Napa brand is all I use, and it works great. I will have to inquire about the price for the 5 gallon pail.

Try POR-15 - they have a kit for cleaning/treating steel gas tanks - was about $80 a couple years ago.

Start by pouring a few gallons of vinegar in it, then check on it 24 hours later.

I use an ultrasonic cleaner for carbs and throttle bodies. Harbor freight has a 2.5 liter for about $60. Works nice.

fill with water, add some sodium carbonate, I think that what it is, It brand name is oxy-clean, laundery isle. then hook your battery charger to it, come back in a week and it be spotless.

All the carb cleaner I've bought lately has sucked. Not powerful enough to do anything.

Now I just sodablast carburetors. Does a much better job.

The Oxy Clean chemical is sodium percarbonate--this method works great on steel motorcycle gas tanks.

Will a trickle charger work? I have a motorcycle gas tank that is in need of some interior cleaning.

Advance auto [now on L.I.] sell a Gunk 1gal.with a basket[works so so] and a 5 gal CRC and some other brand with no basket, but nothing beats thye old Gunk Hydro-Seal.

I would agree with vinegar for the rust. For the gunk I fill a 1 gallon metal pail with methyl ethyl ketone and let the carb soak overnight or longer depending. It thins out lacquered gas and old crusty grease like nobody's business.
