While out checking out garage sales, I ran across this yesterday. I have been looking for a good drill press vise for a while, and a bit of Googling told me this was definitely a good one.

Its a Cardinal 8B Speedvise. The seller had it marked at $55. A little negotiation, and I carried it home for $45. After getting it home, its bigger than what I need, but I can't see how too big and too heavy are negatives for a drill press vise.

What color was this thing? What color should it be?

Nice vise!

Mine is gray. I have no idea if it is original or not but it doesn't look to have been refinished.

I was leaning toward gray, something similar the drill press color. Its currently got several coats of paint on it, predominantly red and yellow. Given the area, this vise likely came from Halliburton, hence the red paint.

I bought this with the initial intention of selling it and using the money to buy a smaller one....but darned if it isn't growing on me.

Those are my absolute favorite drill press vises.

That’s a steal of a price, they’re hundreds of dollars new.

Originally Cardinal painted those a bluish grey.

If you decide you don’t like the marks of shame in the plate, it’s just cold rolled steel bar, easily replaced.

Nice score!

You ****!

I have the 4in and 6in model. The original paint is gray. Google it and you'll find pics.

You can hide those drill hits on the rectangular base plate by disassembling the vise, turning the plate over and reassembling.

This probably isn't the gray its supposed to be...but its the gray I had. Cleaned up pretty nice, if I do say so myself. In the process, I discovered its a 6B, not an 8B...the grime was hiding the truth.

Thanks for the tip on flipping the rail over to hide the pockmarks.

I have an 8, it is borderline too big for even a 22" drill press I have. I'd strongly recommend a light oil and not grease on the screw, as the grease will just collect chips.

This 6 is really too big for my drill press. A 4 would be much more suited to its use, but beggars can't be choosers.

Thanks for the tip on the screw lube. I used tapping fluid because I had it sitting there. Doesn't seem like it really needs much with the open nature of the nut.
