Carolina Carports - Bad Experience

Used Carolina Carports Inc for my shop but had mixed reviews on their service... From the start I could not get answers on what was needed for my shop as far as my slab goes. Their communication was less than great prior to them coming out to build the shop. Once the shop was up we had a problem with the garage (which they say was from the door manufactor). The door was a foot too short but I could not get any answers as to when they were coming to fix the problem. Everytime I call I get the same run arounds of I am doing a schedule now and I'll know later today (they never call back).

Just wanted to post up a warning to those considering Carolina Carports Inc. They are priced cheap but the service lacks, guess you get what you pay for...

Updated. I was told earlier this week they would be out here today. Called this morning and they aren't coming and giving another run around...

Highly suggest everyone stays away from Carolina Carports!!!

Interesting timing on this post. Just this morning, I went by a Carolina Carports display and was going to call them about a lean-to for my shop. I think I'll wait and see how this plays out. Thanks for posting.

A dealer near me in Glasgow KY told me they'd stopped selling any carports except Carolina because that was the only company they'd dealt with that was actually showing up when they were supposed to, doing good work and standing behind the work after it was completed. I looked at the displays on their lot and they look nice. I've been thinking about getting one more carport and was going to go with one of the Carolina's but I hope their service is really as good as this dealer claims. Two years ago I bought a carport from them from another company and the guys that were putting it didn't show up the first two times they said they'd be there. Then they got out there, did a terrible job on the trim (it had to be replaced later by their supervisor) and they didn't even show up with the right tools for the job. I had to loan them a sledge to put the anchors in place, give them a couple of bits to put the screws in and give them an extension cord to use when their cordless drill died after about half a dozen screws.

Carolina Carports is the most unprofessional, unreliable, inconsiderate, discourteous, and irresponsible company in which I have ever done business. The cancel and reschedule their delivery and installation dates at the last minute and dont even bother to show up or call on the date that the company has assigned! Twice I have taken off from work and lost income in order to be available for them and both times they never showed. The first time they called and rescheduled and the second time they just didnt show up or call. I have learned that doing business with Carolina Carports will leave you destitute and lacking!!!

I had a great experience for the most part from the GA office. I ordered mine the middle of May and was told to expect a 6 week wait. I said fine, I can get my slab poured and have plenty of time. 1.5 weeks later they were calling my cell and setting up an install date the next week. Wow, I'm glad I did not put off doing the slab pour. The only "Issue" I had was I was wanting the extra bracing and the sales guys could not tell me what that included and talked me out of it since noone in this area has ever gotten it. Well, the extra bracing puts the vertical studs at 4 feet instead of 5 which is standard for them. Not a really big deal unless you are insulating the walls and putting up wall covering like I did. The install took less than a day. They showed up after lunch, worked until dark then finished up the next morning. I would not write the final check until I did my walk through and check all doors etc.

I had one installed at my last house and I had no problems with the install with the exception of them installing a RH swing door instead of a LH as I had requested. (I was out of state working when they installed it.) I got with my local dealer and he came out the next day and replaced it! I guess it may depend on what area and which crew does it. BTW the crew that did mine came out of Mount Airy, NC. YMMV.

I live in Mt Airy NC aka Mayberry. There is about 5 carport places that i can think of and right across the VA line is 2 or 3 places side of each other with the same owner

cant believe you are complaining about something that is one step lower than a metal shed at lowes. you get what you pay for. at that price they have to be put together with minimum wages.

I was TRYING to get a cheap solution barely above a tarp suspended on baling twine run from the trees. 8 weeks and lots of phone calls, plus two more tarps gave their lives to protect the camper and tractor I was trying to shelter with the cheap (on purpose) solution.

I gave up and canceled, only to find out from the local "dealer" (a place with their displays and prices listed, and the forms to fill out) that 5 other people had also canceled their orders. An unverified statement was made that the install crews only make $70 per carport.

I can build my own pole shed, of course, but I aware I was trying for a cheap solution on purpose until I could build a proper pole shed.

I will try to find someone based in SC that builds the carports.

A call to your states attorney general may be warranted, especially if the work is already completed.

I know this is being posted a long time after this thread was started. I had their largest building (41x48) installed yesterday. I am please with the work so far. The crew came when they were suppose to. The first day they worked til dark in the rain. The second day they started at Sunrise and worked until after Sunset (95 degree 100% humidity). The building was up just before dark, but they still had to clean up the mess they had made. Cleaned up and left. No Complaints from me about their work.

I see others have posted on here about the buildings being cheap. Well that maybe so, but to build a 41 x 48 pole barn out of wood would have been double the cost. This will serve the purpose for what I want to use it for. A place to work on my stuff and a place to store my boat and tractor out of the rain and hot Georgia Sun. I think I may have built more barn than I really needed.

Very similar to my experience. Had two buildings put up 24x40x12 and 24x 65x9. 4 man crew did an outstanding job and had them both up in two days. I haven't gotten around to posting the pictures yet ... still working on that.

Bump, for any updated experiences with Carolina Carports? Me and my wife have been designing a $16,000 building with a dealer that sells for them, but with soooo many terrible reviews, we are scared to death to send the deposit at this point!

Seriously... the check is literally already in the envelope with the signed contract. Due to the size of the building, they want 15% down now, and 45% more when they call to schedule 4-5 days before they come, and the remaining 40% after install. My dealer says $1-$1000=10% down, $1001-$14,999=15% down, and anything over $15000 is 60% down. I told my dealer I would not put that amount down up front, and he came back with the 15/45/40.

What we have found is that most of the metal prefab dealers around us all use Carolina also. I actually have 2 friends that have had great reviews, but with different dealers. So confused!!! Not sure what we want to do.

I know nothing about Carolina but if your having second thoughts don't do it. There is a lot better companies out there.
Not sure what your trying to build but give Morton buildings a call. http://mortonbuildings.com/

If a Carolina is 16 the Morton will be 60.

If I had to advise you must go 12/ga framing and at least a vertical roof. I would also check a price on doubling the studs and trusses. As they send them out its only every 5 ft. Very cookie cutter but its better than leaving your tools car or boat out in the sun and dirt of its all you can afford. I had zero issues with mine but I have heard some stories

Thanks truck, and thanks stage. We have been researching, looking, calling, comparing, etc. since the beginning of 2014, and yes, the Morton buildings are really sweet, but way out of our basic budget.

I designed a customized layout of the building (enclosed carport pretty much), with the frame at 12g, and beefed up also. I also have the siding where it will overhang the edge of slab to minimize/eliminate stormwater getting under and into the building. And yes, vertical roof also.

One of the friends I mentioned has had all types of shops/garages/pole barns, and he currently has a 30x40 enclosed carport and swears that this is the way to go out of all of them for him. He has had buildings over 100' long including the red steel framed ones. I have another friend that has a 24x40 enclosed carport and loves it. Both looked great.

We are not worried that this is the type of building we want, but the so very mixed reviews really have kept us on the fence, and our dealer rep has been caught up in our never-ending conversations of concerns, and we feel bad for him (I have really put him through the ringer for over a year planning this), and he has been good enough to hang in there for us.

And for what it is worth, the contract is between Carolina Carports and the buyer. Not the dealer and the buyer. On a more personal note, I inspect construction engineering for a living, and have to watch after several contractors performing several critical services from pouring concrete sidewalk to building major bridges, and I have to say, work ethics have really changed in the last 30 years. Almost every company I inspect for wants to shortcut on the work, for the full price to do so. And companies fear of legal actions are at an all time low, too. The customer is NOT always right anymore, and companies are NOT held responsible for coming up short on their end. Not all companies, but it does seem like a roll of the dice most of the time these days... have you had a problem cashing in on a product warranty issue lately?

For the most part, from what we know, Carolina Carports has done a good job with every one we know that has used them. And the majority of the complaints are for rescheduling over and over. And even if you have a contract that guarantees, or a legal ground to stand on when the **** hits the fan, who wants to go through the long drawn out hassle of putting the reins on a company to make it right? It is getting harder everyday to make it right for the customer. Sorry for rambling, been a long day. Thanks for allowing me to share my frustrations and concerns.

klm123 .... My experience with CCP has been very good. The install crew did an amazing time and had my two buildings (24x65, 24x40) in 55 hours. I could not be happier with the results. Yes there are much better quality building out there but considering my location, finances, and needs - these building suit me just fine.
I've attach a few pictures

Problems usually are not with the mfg., in this case Carolina Carports. And usually not the dealer, which in most cases are just any unrelated business with space to put up a sample carport. One dealer close to me is a beauty shop. The problems come with the installers. The only way to insure you are satisfied is to withhold payment until you are satisfied with the install.

One dealer explained the business model to me this way: You make a down payment to the dealer. They take their cut and send the balance to CC with the order. CC packages your carport and "sells" it to the installer for less than the balance owed by you. Then (after install), you pay the installer the full balance. The difference is his profit for delivering and installing the carport. The dealer has no control over who the installer is, or what they do or when they do it. Carolina Carports has little control over them as well, since they have already made their sale. Their only control is to cut them off if they get too many complaints. You have the most control, because they need to satisfy you to get paid. The percentages can vary, depending mostly on dealer and installer volume with Carolina Carports. This could all be wrong, but it is what one dealer told me.

I bought a 30X30 Carolina from a different kind of dealer. Carports are all they do, not a sideline. They have their own installers. They have carports in stock, other than the displays. I would suggest anyone considering any kind/brand of carport type building to find this type of dealer. They are easy to recognize, they will have several display models on the "lot", and will NOT have any other business that this is a sideline to. A much more conventional business model, but like any contracted job, NEVER make final payment until you are satisfied that the work is complete and you got everything you ordered.

They have put 4 up for me, A carport, a shop, Tractor shed and boat shed, and I have had no problems. I looked at all the brands they sell around here and CCP was the best built of them all,
I think most of the problems come's from the installers and not CCP, I have used the same dealer all 3 Time's had 2 diff installers, the last one I ordered ran 2 weeks late but my dealer kept me up to date with just a phone call,

+1 The Attorney General can get traction. Also alert the folks who inspect construction for code compliance. I had a shop built where the company was starting to waffle and the inspector found violations and told them they better get their act together on my build fast or they could expect scrutiny like they couldn't even imagine. The company moved heaven and earth getting it right. Government bureaucrats are sometimes on your side and scare people more than lawyers.

Well, sorry I haven't updated my progress with CCP, but we went ahead and drank the koolaid. We now have a 24x55 garage, with a 24x26 double carport on the end. All one slab and one roof with all enclosed. Total of 81' long. We only have rollup doors on the garage, since the wife didn't want to roll the door up and down every time. We will get automatic rollups for those openings. I will try to post some pics soon, but have a lot more to do.

On the Gaport/CCP subject, we are very happy with the end result. There were a few hurdles in between the ordering process, but all worked out good. We ended up paying 15% down, 35% a week before install, and the remaining balance after completion.

We were really nervous about the installers we would get, but I can't tell you how impressed we really were/are with the installers that put this building together. It hasn't rained since the install, but the leak test is coming on Wednesday, according to the weather forecast.

I would highly reccommend CCP again, but I would definitely ask for Miguel Acevedo out of N.C.! I would not want anyone else but him and his 3 crew members to do another building for me! Very professional, and his precise attention to detail and perfection is not even heard of anymore. Still blowing my mind, and I am a very hard man to impress, I promise! We were scheduled for last Thursday and Friday, but it rained out on Thursday. He called and even offered to work on Saturday to make this happen!

Shout out to Ben with Gaport, and CCP for sending the A-Team! And another thanks to all here who have supplied their input for us too!

Pics will come soon.

And PatStroud, nice buildings, and can you please post some close up pics/details of how you have attached your osb to the framing? Nice.

Lets see some more pictures! This is my perdicament now too. Only I am looking for a 12 x 21 garage on a slab.

Sorry, I have been really busy with work and projects. Here are a couple of photos. These were taken last Feb. We have a lot of storage inside, along with my ongoing woodworking shop in progress.

Currently, I am working on a 5'x24' storage loft on the left side in between the carport and 1st roll down door. Framing on that end is complete, and radiant barrier, osb, and loft to follow.

Loving the building so far, but really hot in the summer! Hopefully, once the radiant barrier is totally installed in the whole building, it will be much more tolerable.
