Just random curiosity but who likes what? Sure each have their pros and cons but to me carpet makes a home feel like a home instead of an office building. I may be in the minority here which is ok.

Hardwood.

We had hardwood installed in all the rooms but the bedrooms when our house was being built. we paid extra for carpet and padding upgrade.. fast forward 6 years and the carpet is ****, and we are very easy on it. Should have paid the extra then to do hardwood.

At first I thought this was going to go the way of Carpet and Drapes...

I'm in the midst of having carpet pulled from what remains in the house I recently purchased, three bedrooms, closets, and the hallway and having hardwood installed. Tile in the bathrooms, kitchen and laundry. The previous owners had cats, I am pretty badly allergic to cats, in my visits I did not develop any reaction, but I don't care to find out. I'd much rather have the hardwood from an ease to care for standpoint, one of those swifter dust mops does a good job of picking up dust.

I prefer carpets in the bedrooms, sheet vinyl in kitchens and bathrooms. The rest of the rooms are kind of a tossup. I noticed when we took the carpet out of a couple of rooms that had hardwood under them they was more of a echo in the rooms. Was not pleasant when several kids were in there. This year we might have the carpet pulled up and have vinyl planks put in. Son wants me to do the rest of the house in it, but I told him NO. We'd just do the living room and see how well we like it.

Carpet and pad gets nasty. Harbors smells.

You or family have allergies?

I vote hardwood in all areas except kitchens and baths which should be ceramic in my opinion.

Hardwood thru out the house now, except for porcelain tile in the kitchen / family room and ceramic tile in the 2 bathrooms. We originally put carpet in the bedrooms and living areas when we 1st moved in 31years ago. Little by little, it's all been removed and the floors refinished. We do use area rugs and runners that are easily replaced when SWMBO deems it necessary.

We pulled up the last of the carpet 2 years ago....should have done it sooner.
As often as we cleaned that carpet, I was shocked at what I found. Never again.

Hardwood is a lot easier to keep clean.

Hardwood also shows more dirt. If that is a problem for you.....well......not much we can do to help

Twenty years ago when we bought our house it came with wall-to-wall carpet. It was already about ten years old and needed to be replaced. We opted to go full hardwood including the kitchen. The bathrooms are all tiled. We use area , oriental, and runners. Best decision we ever made . In the past twenty years , we would have to replace the wall-to-wall at least once more.
The big complaint with wood seems to be dirt shows up with wood . My thinking is that the same dirt is there, just ground into your carpet. A quick vacuum, or swifter cleans up wood very well.

Hardwood. My house has the original oak hardwood from the 50's, and I love it. It does show dirt more, but a quick vacuum and run with a microfiber mop and hardwood floor cleaner spray, and it looks great.

Carpet... we had it pulled up at my rental house to install engineered wood and it was pretty grotesque underneath.

Solid wood floors everywhere except the kitchen and bathrooms. Area rugs on the wood floors of heavily used bedrooms.

The $ approach:

No budget worries? Hardwood, with area rugs in bedrooms and wherever else I feel like. Hardwood stairs, with a nice runner if needed. Tile or lino in kitchens and baths.

Skimping a little? Carpet bedrooms, carpet stairs, hardwood elsewhere, vinyl or lino in kitchens and baths.

Just need new flooring of some kind while on a budget? Carpet everything, vinyl in kitchens and baths.

The life event approach:

First home, about to start a family? Carpet everything, tile nothing, sheet vinyl in kitchens and baths. Update it to whatever you want when the rug rats finally move out or are at least big enough not to smack their skulls on your hard floors. Maybe get some carpet back in there when you're really old and your bones are brittle.

The dust and chemical sensitivity approach: Pre- finished US- made hardwood everywhere, no carpet, tile or lino kitchens and baths, and vacuum every day + wand under all the furniture, against the base, etc. etc.

Don't ask.
Depends on the room and some rooms I prefer tile or vinyl.
Rooms with hard surfaces are noticeably louder and possibly colder.
I pulled up the carpet in my old house and had real hardwood floors. I put a large area rug in the living room.
My current house gas laminate flooring that is a lot easier to clean and maintain than the real hardwood was.

:lol: Reminds me of a meeting with an insurance agent a few years ago. She was quoting premiums on a new policy for our just remodeled house. She asked "what kind of floors do you have, wood, tile, or carpet"? I answered "yes". She just sat there & looked confused....:headscrat I explained that we had wood in the entrance, office, wife's art room, sitting room, & on the stairs & 2nd floor landing. We have tile in the kitchen, & baths, & carpet in the living room, dining room, & bedrooms. She still looked confused....:headscrat I found a more upscale insurance agent.......... She never would have been able to wrap her head around RaceDeck...........

I ripped up the carpet and it was nasty. Like gallons of dust and debris was under there and every (very rare) dog urine stain seemed to stay put. Ick. Our allergies are a lot better now with the laminate wood we have now throughout the house. I don't get sick very much now.

Also, the house smells better. If you want a homey feel, you can put down rugs here and there atop the flooring.

The carpet is like a sponge for microbes and nasties. And even if you steam it, that means a little water (and then mold) stays behind. How can this even be a question? It's like asking what's better -- Scarlett Johansson or Roseanne Barr, Snap On tools or Pittsburgh (non Pro versions at that).

Neither. We have little kids and dogs. Porcelain tile is very durable and comes in many styles. Then just use area rugs where you want.

Well we have tile too (kitchen and bathrooms) and then laminate wood in the rest. No carpet. I think most of us have tile in our bathrooms and kitchens.

But what matters is we don't have carpet. :)

Hardwood everywhere but bathrooms. Those have tile. You can always put a nice rug over hardwood, but it's hard to put hardwood over carpet.

As nemo said, both. We live on a farm, heat with wood, we do not live in a shoes off house. We floored according to our life style. I'd suggest that you review your lifestyle and living habits and then make a decision that works for you. After all that, Do what the wife says...

Our house has carpet in every room except the kitchen and bathrooms. We are planning in spring to do laminate in all the living areas and leave carpet in the bedrooms but replace one room as that is going to be the baby room.

Hardwood is cold. We're currently planning to demo our existing house and rebuild this year. Carpet for the bedrooms, livving room, and hallways, hardwood for the kitchen & dining room. Tile for the bathrooms is what we are doing.

I prefer a mix.

Hardwood: kitchen, all hallways, dining room.
Carpet: stairs, bedrooms, great rooms, kids play areas
tile: bathrooms, mudroom, laundry room.

I like the look of hardwood, but it takes more work to keep clean, and to me is cold and less comfortable on my feet. At the current house we did pre-distressed engineered hardwood. So all the dents, scrapes, and dings the kids put into them blend right in!

I dislike laminate and vinyl, even though I have put it down in a previous house.

The house I bought last year was almost all carpet except for entrance, bathrooms, and kitchen. So far I have replaced all the bedrooms with LVP, I love the look and feel of it. I got kids so spills do not worry me in the least. The bathrooms got big 16 x16 inch vinyl tile that I grouted. Looks somewhat like tile bit softer and warmer. The rest of the living room and kitchen is getting replaced this year with more vinyl plank. No more dirty old carpet!

I prefer hardwood throughout the house, even in the bedrooms. If you want a soft padded floor on your feet in the morning when you get up, get an area rug for next to the bed.
