I'm not suggesting this is the best idea for everyone and I wouldn't do it if I build a new garage but___, my 2 car attached garage is carpeted. My next door neighbor replaced her family room carpet several years ago and I asked her if I could have a piece of the old carpet to use when I had to lay on my back in the garage to work on my car. I came home from work to find her entire family room carpet rolled up in my driveway. It is close weave short nap carpet so out of laziness as much as anything I rolled the whole thing out on my garage floor and centered it. It covers all but about 18" of the floor perimeter. My hot rods are not allowed to leak and if I am working with fluids I use a drip pan. Of course the carpet has permanent tire marks and stains from spills but is a lot more comfortable to lay on than bare concrete when I am working under the cars. The bare floor perimeter gives me storage room for liquids and other dirty stuff. The neighbors probably think I'm nuts when they see me vacuuming my garage with a Hoover upright but has worked for me for about 4 years and the carpet still looks almost presentable except for the tire marks, and it was FREE.

Hey I vacuum my cement floor. Nothing wrong with that. I could never have carpet though. It would get so gross. You must live somewhere with no snow and little rain. I think the carpet would remain soaked all winter here in Maine.

I have commercial squares in my shop- I put the squares where I want to be and work off of those. My squares are I think a 36" x 36" and they are padded, not the rubber base.

:scared: In 2001 when I first started in this industry I had two kids one of which was a baby. I needed an office but the business had not grown to that extent. So, ironically, I went to the carpet and purchased a remnant and that was my first office.

Then I went to Hello Direct and purchased the best GN Netcom (now JABRA) headset I could find and we were in business :)

Scary but true. The point is when it comes right down to it the best garage flooring is whatever meets your needs at that moment in time

My neighbor has a ultra durable low, tight nap indoor/outdoor carpet in his garage. I know its always time for the garage cleaning when I see him unloading the big rug doctor lol. Hes had it for the past 8 years, same carpet and I have to say it looks amazing. He has added rubber liners for the wheels of he and his wifes cars.

I had half of my two car garage carpeted. Great for working on things. Parts don't roll a mile away. The other half was the epoxy good for easy clean up and making big messes.

so... any of you guys with carpet do any welding on it? :D

I have and dropped the part I was welding on to it. Needless to say what a mess melted plastic

That was a while ago. I try to keep the welding on the epoxy side.

I have a couple of those commercial floor mats that you walk across when you enter a donut shop or whatever. It'll hold a lot of fluid. When its time, I power wash it. Often vacuum it.

We had a house with a carpeted garage when we moved in. During the wet Northern California winter, smell of what ever was dripping from the cars was just bad. It was also amazing that the dark blue nap was very effective at hiding nuts/bolts dropped there.

I had the carpet that came out of my living room on the side that I parked my camaro on and it was there for nearly 11 years. I pulled it out this past spring when I bought my lift and this spring I am doing vct and around the walls coming out 2' I will use a heavy 3/4" thick rubber mat where my benches, air compressor, drill press, etc sit and the tile will go up to the edge of the mat and the area where the car is parked. I plan on black and white vct from Home Depot which is really pretty reasonable in cost.
