Carport Addition Questions

The house we bought has a 1 car carport, and the detached garage has no driveway and is not in the condition to store a car. The Garage also WON'T be getting redone until after the carport and storage shed. So I need some help with the carport first.

I'm looking at building a storage shed, and I was contemplating between slab and wood base/floors. Well, whenI got to thinking about it, the wood framed base and floors are going to cost ALMOST the same as the slab. So why not do the slab? While I'm doing the slab there, I might as well get the carport framed and poured too!

There is already a 1 car covered carport. i will have to level the ground and extend that one to make it a two car. I just ran through some rough estimates yesterday. From waht I'm seeing a standard size is 8 (or 10) x 20 with a 4"-5" pour.

In the Pictures below, you can see the side of the first carport and then looking back up at it (i'll get some better pics and measurements this evening).

Questions -
1 - should the concrete be 4" or 5" and does it need any support or do I just level the ground with some riversand and pour?
2 - what size and how much rebar should be used?
3 - Can someone briefly describe floating and finishing of concrete? The salesman that came to look at it said that if you've never done either before, you're garunteed to eff it up the first time - so hire someone to do it.
4 - Being that there is already a roof with overhang, I'd have to tie the new one in to that (or leave it roofless). What is a good slope to go with so the roof drains fine?
5 - Any special need to be done when framing? 9keep in mind I have never done anything like this before.
6 - Ive seen where some people pour concrete barrier (I'm thinking footers), amd then pour more concrete for the base. Is this something i'd have to do or can this all be done in one pour?

I'm sure I can come up with MANY more questions, but those will be asked as the planning goes.

I too am thinking about putting a car port in front of my house. I would go at least ten feet wide. Maybe more. Eight feet isn't much wider than a car. Good luck..........jwillis

One thing to think of, while the cost of wood floors verses concrete may be comparable on cost, you might find out about your local tax implications. Around here, on a concrete base, is a PERMANENT, structure, that adjusts your property tax basis, verses having a removable shed.

Thanks for the advice. I have asked about it a little. The fact that it is detached and not within 50ft of the house makes it non taxable. The same reason they were unable to tax me on the garage - or so I'm being told.

Absolutely, I'm building one now on the side of my garage, at 12' it will be just wide enough, but would have been nice to make it even 15' if I could have.
