Hey guys, new here been reading alot, trying to soak up some info. I'm trying to get me a garage this spring, and have got several quotes. Its only going to be used for me to work outof. Just basic stuff, oil changes, alternators, starters, brakes. I do have a set of torches and plan on a welder and air compressor. My main question is has anybody used the carport.com site. I can get one fully enclosed for a third of the price. I know theyr'e harder to insulate but for the price I just keep leaning that way. Also it can be up in a couple of days. Has anybody used one of these? I really need some actual feedback from someone who has one.

Well, having been to numerous P&Z meetings I can tell you that you'd stand a much better chance of getting a permit for a real detached garage than a permit to install one of those cheap-azz $600 car ports. I only see those on car lots and commercial spaces - very few in residential. You can buy one here from about two dozen side of the road places at $595 a pop. As a permanent installation? No, don't think so. Too light weight and not structurally designed to be turning into a building IMHO. I suppose one enclosed with their light gauge metal would be better than nothing.

I was given one 12 x 16 and made a storage building out of it. It is very sturdy. I've walked on the roof to clean the metal. Attached it to 4x4 posts and framed the side walls covered with 4x8 sheets of wood siding. Made a 6' door on the front and it works perfect for what I needed.

Thanks guys, If you can walk on it, it should be sturdy enough. I think if all a person needs is a shell to start with, then this is an economical alternative. Basically the only thing you can't do is hang heavy shelves, or have attic storage, that I can see. I can still insulate it and wire it. You can get them certified for a building permit, and electrical permit. I was just asking for opinions from actual owners. I really don't have the money to have a regular garage built. Anybody else?

I almost bought one from gaport.com but ended up building my own garage. I did buy a carport from them that is made really well and is really sturdy. The only reason I didn't buy the metal garage was I ended up adding on to my current garage. If it wasn't for that, I would have bought a metal garage from them.

i see you are in virginia. im in southern va. my garage is metal building like you speaking of. i bought mine from weathergard inc in 1994. it is a 24 wide x 26 long. i understand you can get them most any size.

I have a 12x21 the I got from Carolina Carports. I got just the carport and framed in the ends. Me and my dad hung the metal sides in one weekend. As it sits I'm in it $1600 including workbench, loft, and lights. All that is left is to finish the electrical and the organizing. The dark at the top of the walls is tinted poly it helps let light in during the day.
P.S. I already had the slab so that was not in my cost.

I think Carport.com is sort of a clearinghouse for other companies that actually make the carports/buildings. You might find a better deal through tntcarports.net They are in Mount Airy, NC.

Mine started life as a carport. It was a little shakey before i framed it out and added the sides.

I have been looking at tube-frame buildings too. For insulation, I have considered adding 2x2's horizontally on the inside every 16" or 24", then installing fg insulation horizontally. That would allow a deep enough wall cavity for the insulation and it would create standard-width attachment points. Has anyone done that?

I recommened you stay away from Carolina Carports. I have been a dealer and I can tell you you have a very good chance of having a very bad expeience.

look at these people I have a carport form them inclosed it added a garage door they also make buildings and large truss type buildings and made here in Arkansas.

I have a Eagle Carport which was ordered through one of those places on the side of the road.

I had them enclose one side and me and my dad enclosed the back with
2x4s and corrugated metal.
It has been very good with no leaks or anything. It is 18x31.
I had it during hurricane Ike with 90mph winds and no problems at all.

I just ordered a 24x36 metal building from Bennett Buildings. It starts life as a carport and you build it ala cart. I opted for the certified version good to 140mph winds, 2 personal doors and two 10x8 certified roll up doors. total cost was $7k installed- I already had the concrete.

Lead time was quoted at 1-3 weeks- its been 2 and I haven't head from anyone yet. so hopefully soon.

I have an 18x20 american steel. I inclosed it,wired it and insulated it. so far its been a great work space...It's still a work in progress though.............
