My dad wants an open carport 20x30 with just a sheet metal roof, and of course very inexpensive given it is just covering some equipment,

He wants to use four 6x6 placed at 0', 10', 20', 30' on each side and then use minimal rafters to span the 20' (using 2x12') and support roof. Since the weight it needs to support is only the sheet metal/clear plastic roof, can this be done with just 7 rafters at the same location as the posts (tied together with 2x6 or if not every 5' then ??

The other option would be to use steel (he was a good bit of 2x4 and 2x6 laying around).

thanks

Would one of those prefabricated metal free standing carports you see all over be an option?

For example, they come in all different sizes.

I asked him about but he wants the walk through at 10' openings so he can get access to the firewood sections that will be right beside. Hence looking at a relatively cheap way of providing a cover

Is he going to run the tin lengthwise? The supports would be 10' apart. I'm not sure if the tin can take that. If he runs the tin cross ways, he'll need purlins to attach the tin to.

Sorry, the rafters would be placed 5' apart although last night he said 4' to make the math easier :) Then run purlins perpendicular to rafters also placed every 4' up the length of the rafter.
