I know none of you personally but I would never even join this forum and post this if I thought it was going to turn out bad. Hell I would have been gone like a fart in the wind if it turned out to be a big mistake.

Either way I am happy with it so far. I need to figure out what I am going to do about the cedar, paint, stain or just seal.

I thought about doing that but will probably do something in color to make it stand out against the yellow of my house. Thought about color matching the shingles and doing it all in Maibec 'driftwood' gray.

Also anyone looking for a split carriage door opener with 9' openings DO NOT order the arms or the kit from North Shore Commercial Door as they will send you the wrong ones and swear up and down they are the right ones. Even the pictures on their website are wrong but they will refuse to admit it. Sommer sells 2 types of arms, one for doors that open/close at the same time and one for overlapping doors. NSCD only sells the overlapping ones but lists/shows the non-overlapping ones.

Granted if your opening is less than 9' the overlapping ones will work but anything 9' or greater they won't work. These are the ones you want:

Alright well I am 99% done, just need to finish the shingles on the side, install the glass on the left side doors and then decide what color to stain/paint the trim + doors. I am thinking paint it all the color of the shingles or paint the trim + doors black and contrast against the gray shingles and yellow house.

I vote to leave them natural with a clear finish. Blends with the fence.
Turned out very nice , good vision on your part.

Final update I think...doors are painted Maibec Nantucket Grey to match the cedar shingles. Hard to see but there are shingle around the doors and all along the left side. I thought about painting the garage all black but with plans to paint the house an all black garage leaves me with limited options.

I also got my driveway dug out, re-graded and some 12 cubic tons of blue stone put down. That in and of itself made a huge difference to the overall curb appeal.

I agree with previous poster about turning out better than I would have imagined, but your drawing turned into reality. Nice work.

hindsight comment.... I would have enclosed under the stairs with concrete extending into that area to. Give you just a little more storage room or a nook for a tool chest work work bench.

Looking really beautiful. If you are looking for a gate opener that can handle heavy-duty gates and is inexpensive, you must try Mighty Mule.

Great planning, great execution, and a beautiful result. It looks like you added six figures to your equity on the home as well. Keep us posted as you finish out the interior!

Back again with another update.

Haven't done much inside the garage other than swap an entire drivetrain in my Datsun but still working on the exterior. Added some overhead exterior lights and changed the vinyl deck railing to hog wire. I was going to replace all the vinyl with wood but I like the white frame with silver hog wire. Makes the house look much more modern and I hate having to power wash all the vinyl every year so this will cut down on that a lot. I haven't finished swapping all the panels out yet but should be done soon.

Vinyl vs hog wire:

I would consider adding another set of hinges at the top of the doors. I think you will see less sag with time if you have another set up high. Just based on my experience with gates and tall heavy doors.

I think I do have another set that I can install them once I get more carriage bolts. But going on nearly 2 years of having them no real sag to see. The biggest problem is I have a stone driveway and the concrete doesn't extend far enough out. So the doors sometimes get stuck on a stone and when it rains/snows a lot the ground freezes up right there and protrudes upward which is a pain in the ***. I am going to have a wider strip of concrete done in front of the doors so I don't have to mess with it anymore.

The one thing I noticed early on is the steel ceiling. Generally you need a fire break with 5/8 fire rated drywall when there is living area over the garage. Looks nice though and great DIY work.

Back again with my never ending garage. The problem I am having is my gravel driveway allows water to drain down below the grade, freeze and push the gravel up making contact when one of the doors opens (far left looking at the front). I could get around that by just digging it out or breaking it up when it froze but in an effort to solve that problem I paid $2500 to extend the concrete 2' past the existing pad. But what that did was just allow the concrete to heave and make it so I couldn't open that same door at all. The concrete guys will fix it in the spring but looking to now maybe just go with over head doors and a low overhead solution vs what I have now.

So to anyone looking for carriage doors for a garage at a low point where it freezes don't do it.

I have a similar problem with a storage shed and asphalt. I'm thinking of trimming an inch off the bottom of the door and adding a rubber sweep to the bottom.

I had the concrete guys come out and shave it down for the time being. Door is working again but will have to do something permanent eventually. Whether overhead doors or the very least, redo that area of the apron with better material underneath it that won't expand and push up (sand there now).
